Girls should be taught feminism at school 'to counter negative influences of celebrity role models'
Teenange girls should be taught feminism at school to stop the growing trend of giving themselves abusive 'male' nicknames such as 'slut' and 'whore', an expert said yesterday.
Dr Jessica Ringrose, who has studied the social habits of schoolgirls, found they increasingly linked their personal worth to their ability to be sexually attractive.
Sexualised insults were common in chatrooms and social networking websites and young girls even boasted of being good at sex acts.
Dr Ringrose, of London's Institute of Education, found examples of girls choosing usernames such as 'slut', 'whore' and ' freesex' on social networking sites.
She called for teachers to discuss feminism and suggest positive role models, who could include figures such as Virginia Woolf, suffragettes' leader Emmeline Pankhurst and even the cartoon character Lisa Simpson.
She said they are needed to overcome the negative influences of celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
Dr Ringrose said: 'If you look at the images and representations girls have to identify with, they are primarily defined through their bodies - being thin, having fake boobs.'
The trend was true of almost all women in the magazines and music videos that were central to young girls' social lives.
Debates in class could raise pupils' use of language and what it says about girls' self-esteem.
'It's important for girls to have a forum for discussing these issues so "feminism" isn't such a dirty word,' said Dr Ringrose.
Lessons in feminism could also help overcome the myth that men and women are now equal.
Dr Ringrose said most schools see gender equality in terms of exam results, where girls now outshine boys in most subjects.
But in the adult world, women are still paid far less and face dilemmas trying to balance work and family life.
Feminism needs to be 'reinvigorated', said Dr Ringrose.
'Pupils shouldn't assume that we've met every target in gender equality. How do you explain the ways popular culture portrays women?'
But the study also found that while girls rely on their sex appeal to create their identities, they tend to see themselves - and others - as 'slutty' if their behaviour goes too far.
Dr Ringrose's research, published in the Times Educational Supplement, comes at a time of growing concern over the sexualisation of childhood through teen magazines, advertising, films and music videos.
Ministers have launched an inquiry into the commercialisation of childhood and teachers' leaders have warned that highly sexualised clothes and toys are being marketed at primary school children.Subscribe to my accounts on DocStoc, Scribd, Twitter and YouTube.

*cough* boys are in desperate need of role models *cough*
Who am I kidding as if anyone cares.Disclaimer:The men's and fathers' movement needs to make sure it never sees females as the enemy, but only misandry--whether from females or from males. If not, we'll become like the bigoted feminists that this movement was formed to oppose.Glenn Sacks

What she is really saying is "Feminism is dying out because we have gone too far so we need new recruits. It's either that or we will have to take responsibility for what feminism has done and let's face it lying to young women is easier"
Well that's what I read anyway.Chevalier.

Re: Girls should be taught feminism at school
My opinion:
These aren't lessons you learn in school. School is for academics. Morality and respect for oneself and others are lessons taught at the youngest of ages, at home. Parents are a child's first, most influential, and most impacting teachers. Lessons in personal values, ethics, and morality should begin before a child is school aged. This has to begin and be continued at home. Feminism is not a synonym for morality. It is condescending of feminists to think that it is. There is far too much hypocrisy in the ideologies of feminism...there are good aspects, but there are negative ones...there are contradictions. If anything, certain aspects of feminism will only serve to confuse a child rather than give a child a solid sense of healthy social, emotional, psychological, physical, intellectual, and spiritual direction.
Take for example the issue we've been debating here about pornography....there are feminists who are against it, and feminists who are for it. The ones who are against it say it disrespects women, and women who engage in it disrespect themselves. But there are feminists who say that porn is empowering. That it's empowering because it's women choosing to have control over their own lives, and their own careers, and their own sexuality. Confusing? Yes it is. Particularly for the young.
Feminists proclaim that their goal is equality, yet the outcome of their push for equality has been, in some cases, to tilt things so far in their favor that men are being discriminated against in certain ways. Affirmative action comes to mind. And though the feminists insist that equal outcome means equality, upon further consideration, most people (in general) can see that equal outcomes means giving preference to people based on physical attributes rather than hard work or merit...and that's not equality. Confusing? Of course it is...especially to the young.
Feminism says that it wants women to be respected for their hard work, yet policies like affirmative action insure that prejudice will continue for as long as these policies are in place. Affirmative action guarantees this. Instead of ridding our world of discriminatory practices, it has managed create discrimination against white males. And it has insured that any woman or minority who is hired based on affirmative action policies will be viewed with prejudice and resentment. Hardly a level playing field.
If girls are going to be taught anything about feminism in school, it had better be the TRUTH, no holds barred. Facts that present arguments for both sides, not PC fiction. But how likely is that? One day maybe...but for now...it's not likely at all.
So morality, self-respect, values...teach these at home. Build that solid foundation, and add to it a healthy and continual dose of encouragement for thinking outside the box. Challenge your kids to be free-thinkers, to question, to be unafraid to challenge. You can only learn so much from being a silent observer. There are times to be quiet, and times when pertinent questions must be answered.

I think, Tera has a good point...Tera: morality, self-respect, values...teach these at home...
In this article control by parents, discipline at home...nothing is mentioned about it. Not even a single word...I read about teachers, feminists...parents are totally ignored.
And? But? Who pays for all these clothes and other stuff? From this article:
Ministers have launched an inquiry into the commercialisation of childhood and teachers' leaders have warned that highly sexualised clothes and toys are being marketed at primary school children.

Re: Girls should be taught feminism at school
I think it is very necessary for feminists to challenge feminism.
And I think it is important what feminists are going to do with the school system now that they have the system and ownership of all children.
That is part one to me.
But what I want to see from feminists is an answer to; "What is going to happen to all the males who reach maturity?"
I know they must consider this now. They have no cop out in my view.
I am worried that we have communism while the children are young and Nazism when they get of age.
Who is running the show?
Who has the power?
Feminist think that men control everything and that they are a small group compared. But that is a cop out too that I will not tolerate.
........
This is to my colleagues that have watched my growth.
I have gone through major change and I was angry and now i am becoming focused and powerful ( I am not sure if that is the best work to describe it but you should have heard me today. My God I am going to be good)
What a journey this is.

Re: Girls should be taught feminism at school
Quite what Dr Jessica Ringrose is trying to convey beats me. I think it is just another example of a canard raised to get feminists angry at imaginary problems - with that added feminist tactical ploy of claiming that something doesn't exist even while beating us over the friggin' head with it.
I answered those questions in another thread, yesterday.Who is running the show?
Who has the power?
Teachers.
Women teachers.
They can slide Feminism effortlessly and seamlessly into the daily sub-text.
They do already.
Almost everything about schooling is feminist, from the agitprop techniques to the scare stories of monsters under the desk peering up schoolgirl's dresses.
Of course some of the squishy readers may protest about education being about more than readin', writin' and 'rithmetic. Modern education, we are told, must be about 'life skills': the ability to cope with the rapidly changing world, and installing 'societal values' in children like 'compassion', 'social justice', 'Land rights for gay whales raped in nuclear war', and a hundred other non-outcomes which are totally immeasurable.
'Political awareness' used to be a compulsory university subject in the People's Paradise Republic of China, but there is no such subject in Australian schools: mostly because subjects aren't really taught any more. They just move from issue to issue. One politically correct indoctrination session slides into another seamlessly in today's highly efficient streamlined goal oriented educational system.

Re: Girls should be taught feminism at school
She obviously doesn't have a doctorate in evolution, nor subscribes to Darwinism, otherwise she'd realize that a females urge to be sexually attractive to men is hardwired.Dr Jessica Ringrose, who has studied the social habits of schoolgirls, found they increasingly linked their personal worth to their ability to be sexually attractive.
Female personal worth is very much obtainable in a gynocentric society that endlessly celebrates femaleness - bolstered by an attendant biased academia, entwined with a very receptive workplace.
However, for some women, the road to ingratiating herself and subsequently attaining financial rewards - is easier travelled by marketing her natural wares. The more laborious and time consuming CHOICE of achieving personal worth by following the traditional elongated path of males, is less favoured!
Isn't this already the case, so much so - the ideological propaganda often detrimentally affecting real learning, 'genuine' historical perception and the ability to question. Even aside from higher learning, feminism and it's best buddy political correctness have been incorporated into much of the curriculum (to varying degrees). It's pretty much inescapable!!! And she calls for the dosage to be increased? She called for teachers to discuss feminism and suggest positive role models, who could include figures such as Virginia Woolf, suffragettes' leader Emmeline Pankhurst and even the cartoon character Lisa Simpson.
It's like a drug addict, the recipient needs increasingly potent doses in order to remain oblivious to reality.
In other words, lets find new ways to flog this lucrative dead horse. She reminds me of old Soviet hardliners desperately trying to revive communism - despite irrefutable evidence to the contrary which disputes it's practical viability. It's heartening to note such feminists inadvertently admitting feminisms waning appeal. It's like selling tickets for camping plots on a melting iceberg.Feminism needs to be 'reinvigorated', said Dr Ringrose.

Feminism is taught in public schools. First it's crammed down our throats, then it's passed on through hidden propaganda.
