Arizona Teacher Requires Boys to Have Old-Fashioned Manners in Class'

'When Elise Rierson walks into Latin class, the door is held open for her. When she arrives at her desk, her chair is pulled out for her.
It's not the kind of treatment most 14-year-old freshman expect. But Elise and the rest of her female classmates have gotten used to the chivalrous gestures -- and rather enjoy it.

Among Ivanyi's other rules, boys are not allowed to sit at their desks until the girls have been seated first. And if a girl should stand in the middle of class, the boys must stand with her to show respect.

"If my daughter's dating boys who are polite in that way and show respect in that way," she said, "then I have no problem with it."
For their part, the girls only need to say "thank you."
But Erin Matson, acting vice president of the National Organization for Women, said she wonders if singling out the boys for good manners is the way to go, even though she called the idea of old-fashioned manners "adorable."
"We see it as teaching kids to treat people differently because they're girls," Matson said, though quickly adding. "I don't want to seem like an angry raging feminist."
"I'm sure some of the boys and teachers in the school wouldn't mind the door being held open for them too," she said, calling for "etiquette for all, just across the board."

Cindy Post Senning, co-director of the Emily Post Institute and great-granddaughter of the etiquette guru, said she admired the thought behind Ivanyi's plan, but questioned whether his rules on manners were a bit outdated.
"I wouldn't teach the same manners that Emily wrote about in 1922, but I'd definitely teach the same principles," she said.
The roles between men and women, she said, are constantly evolving. Back in the 1960s, as more women were entering the workforce, it was common for women to remain seated when a man introduced himself. Now, she said, it's considered not only good manners, but a show of equality, for the woman to stand.

This mangina teacher has no right imposing his subservient proclivities or politics on his male pupils.

Standing when the girls enter the room? Holding open doors? Pulling out their chairs? Carrying their books? Hasn't slavery been abolished? I can understand mothers being all for this, but how many fathers are speaking out against this?

In an age of supposed equality there's no mention of 'weighted' reciprocation, which would lessen this distasteful historical reenactment of the master and slave role.

teacher Cord Ivanyi tired of watching what he has said were boys disrespecting their female classmates.

Girls are no different these days, probably worse in terms of being disrespectful overall, but I wouldn't support girls being subject to anything similar either. Teachers have no right to implement social engineering, just friggin' teach.

For their part, the girls only need to say "thank you."

I don't know whether to condemn this or condone it.

Obviously this is completely sexist against boys so that is reason enough to condemn it.

On the other hand, feminism and chivalry cannot co-exist so perhaps I should condone and watch chivalry kill feminism.

Honestly, if men start treating women in a chivalrous manner, they will be unable to view women as equals for very much longer.

I would disagree as to the co-existing aspect. Your wrongly assuming feminism has a moral code of any variety. Feminism is like the Borg collective, it will assimilate all and make everything consumed, it's own.

The fact that those insects have recanted their notion of killing off the male gender into men becoming the slaves of women pretty much gives them away. Slowly but surely the male good side is being eroded, for example, in the future if a male holds a door open for a female, it will not be because he is a decent, well-mannered person, it will be because it is the law to do so.
I would simply urge my son, with my full permission, to raise his middle finger every time a girl stood up, and to kick that fuckin' door in anyone's face who he's told to hold it open for, good manners are not engraved in law, it's part of who we are, but if we're going to be forced into it, then the ladies better expect a few broken noses after they've had a good few doors slammed in their entitlement coupons.
