    5 y/o boy dresses as Daphne from Scooby Doo for Halloween

    A good parent tells their child he can be anything he wants. Especially on Halloween. And that's just what one mommy blogger did. When her 5 year-old son got a hankering to be Daphne from the Scooby Doo gang, she bought him the red wig and the costume of his dreams. But she didn't bargain for the ridicule from moms at her son's nursery school Halloween party.


    She writes: "Two mothers went wide-eyed and made faces as if they smelled decomp...Mom A says in disgust, “Did he ask to be that?!” I say that he sure did as Halloween is the time of year that you can be whatever it is that you want to be...And then Mom C approaches [and says that] I should never have ‘allowed’ this and thank God it wasn’t next year when he was in Kindergarten since I would have had to put my foot down and ‘forbidden’ it."


    It's hard not to question every choice you make as a mom. But in this instance, the mommy blogger knew it wasn't her family with the problem. It was other mothers. And she wasn't going to stand for their bullying.

    So she took to her blog and to defend her son. And came to one very strong conclusion: there's a double standard.

    "If my daughter had dressed as Batman, no one would have thought twice about it. No one."

    The past few weeks, the struggles of young, gay men has become a serious issue. The expectations of others, especially for boys, can lead to agonizing and sometimes fatal circumstances. If anyone understands the need for equal rights to self-expression it's women. So why don't young boys have the same freedoms as young girls? Thanks to moms like these, some do.

    "If a set of purple sparkly tights and a velvety dress is what makes my baby happy one night, then so be it. If he wants to carry a purse, or marry a man, or paint fingernails with his best girlfriend, then ok. My job as his mother is not to stifle that man that he will be, but to help him along his way. Mine is not to dictate what is ‘normal’ and what is not, but to help him become a good person."

    Obviously there is no father in the picture... I don't know a single self respecting dad that would allow this to happen. Look at all the support this is getting, over 90% of the comments are in favor of this. I know I dressed up as a Carebear once when I was five, but it was a male bear not a female. I mean, i'm pretty sure if there was a father with a shred of common sense he would have suggested the kid go as scooby, he could do shaggy or fred and his wife go as daphne... If that kid doesn't turn out gay, he'll be ridiculed for the rest of his life. I mean look at that picture.... theres no way in hell he dressed himself. I detect foul play on the mom's part. Just another example of a crazy feminist single mommy taking revenge on her husband through her kids. If not, then this is more evidence of our Canadian men turning into manginas at the speed of light. I can only imagine the embarrassment and anger this kid's father feels right now.

    I am so disgusted with this, I want to puke!!!

    I don't see the issue.. the kid wants to dress up for a party... plenty of guys dress in drag for parties and some make big bucks from doing so.

    Personally, as a Father, although I'd perhaps have some trepidation about the situation, I'd support his choice to do so - but give him the forewarning of mockery he may face from more biased folks.

    ...so? the kid decided to go as daphne, let him have fun. The mother even pointed out the double standard. If a girl went as a male character there would be no problem, but if a boy wants to go for a female character its taboo. If anything that could qualify as an anti-male double standard being broken by a 5 year old kid.

    As marx said, he might get harassed, and when he is in highschool, his friends will probably make fun of him for it, but i dont see this as scarring him for life. It was his idea and his choice, so let him go.

    I have no problem with a man doing whatever he damned well wants to do. And that goes for 5 y/o boys too.

    If a chap is a raving poofter, so be it. He's still a man and deserves the respect due a man, just so long as he raves quietly and poofts in private.

    The mum here is quite right. She was faced with a difficult situation and stood by her lad.

    More power to the kid and screw those women who had a problem with his choice of costume. This just shows who's really close minded. Certain people try to act like it is only heterosexual white males who are the problem, but yet again we see it's the 'enlightened' women trying to enforce their will, just like how it's women, not men, that complain about women breastfeeding in public.

    Hey, it's the boy's choice to dress up as he pleases as long as he is properly covered. There was actually and Asian dude at my college who actually wants to dressed up as an anime cat girl.

    Nobody gave me crap when I chose to dress as Blade for Halloween.

    It isn't about a boy doing as he pleases, its about a mom making a bold statement with her child.

    I really disagree with you guys on this one. The mother has got to have some serious dysfunction in order to help her son dress up like a girl. I know plenty of mothers like this, I don't think you guys get whats going on here. In Canada young men are being encouraged to embrace their feminine side. Boys are encouraged, by their liberal short haired mothers to play with gender neutral toys, my little ponies and wear pink clothing. While women are ushured into sports and games of competition while dressing in boys clothes. I was at a Doctors picnic a few summers ago and there was this little boy off by himself playing with barbie and my little pony. When I asked him where HIS toys were? His mother became extremely defensive and said she was happy that he was playing with those toys, that his favorite color was pink and that children in her house were not allowed to play with violent toys. It is political correctness in its highest form. It couldn't be any coincidence that this same mother had her hair cut shorter than mine, wore jeans and a t-shirt and had a husband that looked like a white steve urkell? You bet there is.

    When I was growing up I never wanted to be a girl or play with girl toys. There is something VERY wrong with this. Yes there is a double standard BUT that is the very problem. Women should not be playing with toy shotguns and star wars stuff and men should not be dressing up like women and playing with Barbie. To me, this is what happens when children are not encouraged to play with gender specific toys or fill gender specific roles. In the end you get gender confusion. I would rather have a wife who tells my kid that he is a boy and that putting on pantyhose, a bra and prancing around like a fairy is not what boys do. I would like to know where the influence to dress up like Daphne came from? Why isn't he pointing out He-Man, Master Chief, or Han Solo? It is certainly acceptable for boys today to dress as women and enjoy womanly activities. I would bet money that this kid isn't allowed to play with guns or action figures. The general acceptance of this behavior, on a forum which combats anti-masculinity really disturbs me.

    Notice there is NO comment from the father. I don't see her posting about how her husband fully supports this. No sorry, I think you guys are going a little overboard with your right to freedom of expression. I would be equally upset if my daughter wanted to dress up as He-Man.

    I wouldn't be surprised. When my grandparents were young, cross dressing was frowned upon and heavily despised. More than likely if I had a son he wouldn't be wearing a skirt. The truth is, you can't make someone dress appropriate. That's just something they have to learn the easy way or the hard way.

    I don't know what old photos you've been looking at, but a lot of the outfits worn by boys in black and white photos would be considered quite feminine by today's standards. In the time of black and white photos, pink was a boy's color, but today is considered feminine. Someone on here mentioned tights, which were a regular part of men's dress (with their tunics). Pink tights, as was mentioned, would be a quite masculine piece of clothing to have been worn. The bible also says eating pork is forbidden, but I have a feeling a lot of the people here are very selective about the passages they quote so they can continue doing what they like while criticizing others about things they don't like.

    Hi Marx,


    I refuse to waste my time arguing with him, he is only trying to be clever, you and I both know that up until recently, men and women, here in the UK, dressed differently.


    I have seen numerous black and white photos that bear this fact out, the young lad in the photo, was not dressed as a female.


    As for his mentioning of “Pork” what has that got to do with this issue ?

    As for me having a "Case" the word of God is final.
