Re: "Under what circumstances should we care about others' choices?"

Very interesting. Personally, I don't care what a person does unless it affects me personally, or my loved ones, or affects society as a whole. Then, I make it my business.

Re: "Under what circumstances should we care about others' choices?"

But don't we accuse feminists of caring only about their own choices as if they don't affect anyone else?

Rarely do the choices we make only affect us, personally.

It's hard to get people to look closely at the bigger picture.

Re: "Under what circumstances should we care about others' choices?"

Well, it all depends on the choices we're talking about doesn't it? If another man or a woman chooses to be a homosexual. That doesn't affect me, so why should I care? If my mother cheats on my dad, than that is something I care about. It all depends on what these choices are.

Re: "Under what circumstances should we care about others' choices?"

I just found out my answer got chosen as best answer on this question, too!

Yay! Yay because I pointed out that women create the kinds of stereotypes that they seem to hate so much.

And a seasoned feminist (Rio...number one on the leader board at Gender and Women's studies forum...the gal who asked the question)....actually chose my answer as best...even though I know it challenged her way of thinking. At least she thought about it!

We can communicate. Can be heard. It's not entirely hopeless.

Although I will concede that Rio's final comment about girls being "suckered into this" still suggests she sees women as victims of forces completely beyond their own control. Though we are all subject to pressure from society, we do have choices. We need to be responsible for those choices.

I think she missed that idea in my post.

Re: "Under what circumstances should we care about others' choices?"

Tera I will simply say we should all care about the choices of others.

Just because we have an urge doesn't mean we should act on them.Right?

Isn't that what feminism preaches?

I could choose to go postal somewhere but since I care about the well being of other I choose not to. So choices matter and we should care what choices others make.

Look at the mess the U.S. Great Britain and other countries are in because we have taken away all constraints from any one who may scream that they are a victim with the exception of white hetrosexual religious males that isn't allowed because all of the victims need a bad guy or they lose their right to choose to be a perpetual victim.

If people were actually taught to make decisions best on what is best for every one instead of just themselves we wouldn't have so many fatherless children joining gangs and killing one another while making a contest out of who can act the most ignorant.

Re: "Under what circumstances should we care about others' choices?"

Of course people make choices and there is little we can do about most. We can, and do, influence those choices.

Feminism is NOT about women making their own choices. Early Feminst Simone de Bouvoir said "Women should not be allowed to be housewives". She is a feminist 'Saint' yet denied women the choice. She even expressed the view that 'someone', she presumably, had the power to 'allow' or refuse to allow, women a choice that some might wish to make.

Feminism is totalitarian. Everything is strictly forbidden unless expressly 'approved'. And what is 'approved' is all too often destructive and selfish.

And what about the valence of the choice? Does that not get consideration? Tera tried. There are 'bad' choices and close people have not just a right to strongly influence, but a 'duty of care' to.

The question asked reflects the hypocritical bind that is feminism.
