A British woman is being held in the US after police discovered her 11-year-old daughter's diary that claimed she was forced to act as a sex slave while living in England.
The girl claimed her 40-year-old mother would bring men home from Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and let them rape her beginning when she was aged five.
She also told investigators her mother sexually assaulted her and that the abuse continued when they left Pontefract, West Yorkshire, and moved to Vermont in 2004.
The girl, who now lives in California with her father, told detectives that she'd been repeatedly raped by her mother's 38-year-old American boyfriend.
The pair both now face being jailed for life, if convicted, after being charged with aggravated sexual assault on a child.
They each deny the charges.
The alleged victim's father, who has looked after the girl since 2006, went to the police after she made the claims privately to him.
Vermont State Police later found the child's diaries at her mother's house which they say provides evidence to support her allegations.
Detective Lance Burnham said: “She is very credible. We have no reason not to believe her. We were able to confirm certain dates that she spoke of.
"This child could not have fought back. She was unable to do so. She was totally at the mercy of these two individuals."
Burnham said he had been in contact with police in Pontefract but there was not enough evidence to begin a criminal investigation in the UK.
