An Aurora-area woman was sentenced to two days in jail last
Friday following a Linn County conviction for initiating a false
police report. Multiple agencies had investigated an alleged
report she was kidnapped and sexually assaulted last summer.

The sentence also included an order to repay more than $8,000
to police agencies for costs incurred to investigate the original
complaint.

According to the Oregon State Police, here is what happened:

On June 28, 2009, Nicole Ann Pedersen, 28, went to the Albany Samaritan General Hospital emergency room to report she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted over a three day period by an unknown man.

Pedersen had also been reported missing by family members to the Aurora Police Department.

Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division detectives were called out in the middle of the night to investigate.

During the next 10 days, OSP troopers from Springfield, Albany and Salem offices assisted along with investigators from Aurora and Scappoose police departments.

The investigation determined Pedersen consensually spent the weekend with a male friend and she was subsequently charged in Linn County Circuit Court with initiating a false police report.

On January 8, Pedersen was sentenced to three years probation, two days in jail and court costs. She was also ordered to pay about $8,035 in restitution to OSP and Aurora Police Department, with OSP to receive about $5,630 and Aurora police to receive about $2,400.

So that's five times less than even the length of the police investigation.

I suppose at least she's paying for everything.

Strange how they make people pay when the investigation is relatively cheap such as this one, whereas when it runs into six figures such a phenomenon never occurs.
