Woman charged with making false report

A Bryan woman accused of making up a story about being kidnapped and raped by two men in order to hide a drug binge was arrested Thursday on a charge of filing a false police report.

Melanie Aleane Fletcher, 35, told investigators in Bryan about the alleged incident in September, according to court documents. But when police confronted her the next month with statements that didn't seem to add up, she admitted to fabricating the story, documents state.

She remained at the Brazos County Jail on Friday on $4,000 bond for the Class B misdemeanor, along with a $12,800 bond for a driving while intoxicated charge out of Bexar County.

According to investigators' reports, Fletcher initially told police that she had been abducted by two strangers and was later found naked by a maintenance worker. But security cameras didn't back her statements up, police reported telling her during a follow-up interview in October.

Police also informed Fletcher during the interview that her sister had told them about a previous false sexual assault report Fletcher had made upon returning from a drug binge.

Fletcher initially responded that she had been clean for more than a year, police said. But a short time later, she admitted to lying about the kidnapping and rape, saying that she "did not know what she was doing because she was under the influence of drugs," reports state.

Police said she told an officer during the interview that she had seen a neurologist earlier in the day because of frequent nosebleeds - the result, she said, of trauma to the head received during the assault. She later said that, while she did see a doctor that day, the reason for the visit was because she couldn't sleep, documents state.

And the nosebleeds were due to snorting cocaine, she conceded, according to police.

Police later contacted Child Protective Services, reporting that Fletcher left her child with her boyfriend during the binge without telling anyone where she was going.
