Teenage student who falsely cried rape 'has harmed real victims'

A UNIVERSITY student who falsely cried rape has been condemned for doing a disservice to genuine victims.

Karen Cassie, 19, claimed she had been attacked and forced to have sex following a drunken night out.

The man she accused went back to her flat after meeting in a nightclub and the pair started kissing but he left when he felt "uncomfortable" with the situation.

The fashion design student at Heriot Watt University in Galashiels, Selkirkshire, was later found by friends crying outside her accommodation and she told them she had been raped.

She repeated the allegation to the police but when discrepancies appeared in her story she later admitted she had not been raped and was "extremely remorseful".

Meanwhile, the man she accused of raping her was detained by police for several hours and subjected to a full forensic investigation.

Selkirk Sheriff Court heard that the student had written a letter of apology to the man in which she described him as a "decent guy" who "did not deserve this".

She wrote: "I cannot explain why I did it. I deeply regret it."

Sheriff Kevin Drummond said: "I am sure you understand you did a great disservice to every genuine rape victim. You also did a grave, grave wrong to a young man and wasted a considerable amount of police time. It is to your credit that you recognise all that.

"This is a charge which would justify imprisonment but, in all the circumstances, I am able to apply the alternative."

The teenager stood motionless as she was ordered to carry out 80 hours of community service.

Cassie, of Achinreir, Barcaldine near Oban, Argyll, pleaded guilty to a charge of wasting £538 worth of police time after making the false rape accusation at Galashiels Police Station on 18 October last year.

Mark Keane, prosecuting, explained how Cassie had been out drinking with friends on the evening of 17 October – ending up at a local nightclub. He said: "She was very drunk and at about 3am, she walked off with a man, and they got a taxi to her address."

Mr Keane said the pair "chatted, listened to music, and started kissing" but the man "felt uncomfortable" and arranged a lift home, leaving at about 3:45am.

When Cassie was not in her accommodation, friends began to look for her, and found her outside the building, sitting on the ground, upset, and crying.

Mr Keane said: "They asked her what was wrong and she said she had been raped."

Police attended and the taxi, which had taken the man home, was intercepted and he was detained before being subjected to a full forensic examination.

Cassie gave a statement at 7:30am, claiming the man had raped her.

Mr Keane went on: "He was interviewed and denied the allegation, and the accused was interviewed again regarding discrepancies, when she said her recollection was poor due to the amount of alcohol she had taken.

"She said she could not explain why she had said she had been raped."

Defence agent Greig McDonell said:

"She is no longer going out and getting drunk."

Wow a whole 80 hours of community service!

Don't get me wrong she has at least admitted guilt and seems to be somewhat genuinely sorry, but that makes it more a a mid range type of offence, so only worthy of maybe three years inside.

It seems part of excusing her crime and the reason she' not going to get the prison sentence she deserves is perhaps the fact she was so drunk at the time of making the initial allegation. We all quite rightly agree that being drunk doesn't excuse a normal rape, thus it shouldn't excuse a reverse rape in the slightest either.

Further still, she's got an advantage her over a drunk rapist, in that she would have sobered up hugely by the time she formalised the reverse rape by involving the police.

Also when is she going to pay back our money - it's not just police time she's wasted, but taxpayer money. No wonder we're in such a terrible state financially when even criminals as sick as this don't have to pay back a penny.

Yes but two wrongs don't make a right. All those women out there who totally refuse to admit guilt in similar cases in spite of absolute proof of their crimes clearly deserve a more lengthy punishment than people such as this women. No only for moral reasons, and not only because of the additional damage they cause to their vicitms, but also because they represent slightly less of a danger than someone in denial.

Of course we currently have insufficient punishment for reverse rape cases, but if the correct penalties were in place this woman would deserve a discount.

On a related note I wonder how many judges would tell normal rapists of the credit they deserve etc? Seems rather inappropriate wording - should be "deserves slightly less condemnation". Apologising for such a crime should surely be expected and just be the norm, especially for such a serious offence.

She should have done hard time, the same hard time the innocent man would have done if he had been convicted, what about compnsation for the man who was no doubt humillated and ill treated by the police, who will not take his dna out of the database.
80 hours of communty service my ass, in fact I think that her " Communty Service " should be piloryed and used a public service sex toy for whoever decieds they need to vent some steam/dump a load of cum.
That would be far more effective as not only a deterances for her but for other women who would make a false claim

I totally disagree - firstly many of these women committing such offences are quite evil individuals and would probably enjoy such a punishment. Further still, one day we might end up in a situation where all false rape cases are prosecuted rather than just the odd one here or there. Ultimately, through the aid of perhaps some corrupt judges and police officers this could eventually lead to a wrongful conviction for false rape. (obviously nothing like the scale of wrongful convictions for rape itself, but it's the same principle).

Therefore whilst we need to be protected from such evil women, and they need to repay their debt to society, they also need to be treated humanely due to the tiny possibility that one day in the future there's a very small but still real chance that one of them may in fact be wrongfully convicted. Taking your logic further, you'd probably castrate every rapist, which is all well and good, except there are so many people like Karen Cassie around (and worse) attempting to frame men for such crimes.

I agree with you I was just being a rat bastard at the moment I made that post but I think a public display and hard jail time would go a long way in putting an end to this bullshit
