PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ― Twenty-five percent of all women report being sexually assaulted before the age of 18.

But unfortunately, a number of those claims turn out not to be true.

Such was the case this week when a 15-year-old girl claimed she was abducted and assaulted on the North Side.

The claim was a frightening one: a 15-year old girl said a man approached her at a bus stop near Fleming Avenue, beat her, drove her to an unknown area and sexually assaulted her.

"Certainly my initial feelings were being appalled and very concerned for the victim," said Pittsburgh Action Against Rape executive director Laura Randolph.

But as it turns out, police say the girl was lying, something Randolph says is unfortunate.

"I don't think that someone goes to those lengths to get that kind of attention just for fun," said Randolph.

So why would someone make a false claim?

"Often young people are in situations that they should not be in and doing things they shouldn't be doing and it's often fear or retribution from parents," Mt. Washington Psychiatric Services Dr. Charolette Hoffman said.

Randolph says the fact that up to 10 percent of sexual assault claims turn out to be false can lead to another problem.

"The public jumps on these kinds of occurrences to kind of reinforce their own erroneous assumptions about how frequent rape occurs," said Randolph.

Regardless of what this teen's motives were, Randolph says this crime needs attention.

"I think we continue to educate the public about the prevalence of rape and sexual assault in our community we continue to try to work and help people understand," said Randolph.

In this case, police do not plan to file charges against the young woman and she and her family have been referred to social service agencies for help.

Prosecuting false allegations would cut down on the innocent being jailed.

There is a particularly disturbing advert running on TV in Tasmania at the moment.

It shows a picture of four little girls in ballet leotards standing in the wings of a stage. The caption reads, "I on 4 girls are sexually abused". No voice, No music. Just silence.

The lie is bare-faced. But people will believe it of course.

The implication is that it is not 25% by the time she gets to be a 'woman', an adult, having gone through quite a few years of fumbling teenage sexuality where even a look at her boobs falling out of her over-tight tank-top, or a look at her knickers barely concealed by her tiny flip-skirt is 'assault, or 'abuse', but is 25% before a little girl gets to be six.

The picture is soft-lit and has a sensuous 'feel' to it, almost like the photgraphs that Bill Henson takes which were condemned by our Prime Minister (after a three second viewing of a news item) as disgusting and filthy. They were not of course, but hysteria is being lead from the top by our mangina 'Dear Leader', Chairman Mao Kev Rudd.

Even a charming picture of innocence can be distorted and put to mendacious use by these evil, rent-seeking scum.
