    Police are wising up

It is good to see that the police are giving press about this kind of thing.

Vermillion Police: False Reports Drain Resources

Police in Vermillion say they're wasting their time and resources investigating false reports that never wind up in court. Vermillion Police Chief Art Mabry says the department has seen a string of false reports lately and its taxing the department's resources.

On Tuesday Mabry said an 18 year old was charged with making a false report to police after she said her ex-boyfriend was sending threatening text messages and was in Vermillion threatening to kill her. A police investigation discovered the ex-boyfriend was in Nebraska and never sent any messages to the woman.

The streets of Vermillion are typically quiet, so when officers hear about serious crimes they do everything they can to investigate those cases.

"If it's a true crime the evidence will point to that, if it's a false report we will figure it out," Vermillion Police Chief Art Mabry said.

And recently the Vermillion Police Department has been receiving more false reports.

"It's typically people trying to get back at a spouse, a former relationship," Mabry said.

Mabry says they've had rape cases reported that turned out to be nothing more than a dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend.

"We're seeing where sexual assaults are reported to us and we find out that actually a boyfriend found out that a girlfriend was out with someone else, and rather than just dealing with it or talking about it the allegation all of a sudden becomes I was raped. Obviously we take those very seriously," Mabry said.

Mabry says such serious allegations take a lot of resources from his department and take away from other legitimate cases that may turn out to be even more serious.

"I don't think people understand or realize the consequences of what happens here," Mabry said.

Which is why if the Vermillion Police Department finds anyone else making false reports, they say that person should be prepared to face the consequences.

"If we catch you, you're going to be charged. We haven't always charged this in the past but now that we're seeing such an increase in it you're going to start paying for your actions," Mabry said.

Mabry says he doesn't want this warning to deter people from reporting actual crimes. But, if you know you're lying to authorities, he says, you will be charged.

Making a false report to police is a class one misdemeanor and carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and two thousand dollar fine.
Do not ever suppose that a small group of people can never change the world. INDEED it is the only thing that ever has.

One year in jail!? Is that all that is done to prevent false accusations? How can the legal systme not see an imbalance when someone can risk only one year in jail (and 2000 dollars in fine) as punishment for an attempt to ruin someone's life in a quite permanent way (not to mention the many additional years in jail the victim faces if the false-accuser is believed)!? I think they should do something more on the lines of punishing the false accuser exactly like the falsely-accused would have been... wouldn't that be fairer and a much better deterrent?

That's lying under oath. There are different crimes. The problem is the special treatment that rape accusers get and all the incentives to press false allegations.

Nice to see an explanation of the consequences of false/reverse rape in terms of impact on the taxpayer on on genuine vicitms of crime.

The allegations do not impact on genuine rape victims - they impact on the vicitms of whichever crime is taking place at the time the false claims are being investigated. I.e. whichever crime gets ignored due to the wasted time on the non existent rape. The chancs are this will not be another rape, but something deemed less worthy.

We should note from the article that the police in that area seem relatively on top of crime yet are still concerned about false allegations being a problem. Teh impact of such allegations will be far, far more severe in a poorer area with much higer levels of crime where the police are already unable to deal with all the genuine crimes nevermind non-existent ones on top.

    Good to see this acknowledgement.

One year for a false report that doesn't get legs is a good start. But perhaps Jail is not the best place alone. A daily march to spend several hours tied to a post in the town square would be a better advertisment of consequence.

    Re: Police are wising up

It's great to see police acknowledgement of the significant number of rape allegations made against completely innocent men.
A number of UK judges have recently spoken out about the issue too.
But why has there only been concern expressed about the amount of police time and taxpayers money wasted investigating these allegations, or how these lies effect genuine rape victims. Why is little or no consideration given to the innocent men who go through all kinds of hell trying to prove their innocence and who, after having their names made public, can suffer ostracism, unemployment, vigilante attacks, and suicidal depression even after they have been proven innocent, and who are very rarely compensated or see justice served on the women who inflict this upon them.

The punishment for false rape accuse should be equal to the punishment that would have been served on the innocent accused if the allegation were believed.
Furthermore, these women should be made to sign a false rape accusers register so that men can identify these women and protect themselves against them.

There is legislation pending in my home state of Pennsylvania to treat false reporting of rape as a more serious crime: http://falserapesociety.blogspot.com...alse-rape.html. It doesn't specify what the penalty should be, though this seems to be a step in the right direction. I have written my representative in The State House and my state senator in support of this as well as posting about it on my blog: http://funktardtroll.blogspot.com/20...nsylvania.html. I don't know what the status of it is now. I hope it passes on the first try, but even if it doesn't that will not be the end of it. I'll make sure of that.

It's rather telling how the deliberate blighting of a man's reputation and possible loss of liberty only comes fleetingly into focus because it's draining official resources. It's like everything else, it only ever becomes a problem when it's affecting anything other then men!

Maybe also photos of women convicted of false allegations posted in every pub, bar and club etc? How about a national website to collate all the data? Such women have no sense of shame - so at least men can be forewarned from them.

I have some qualms about that. The sex offender list in the U.S. has been subject to abuse - people have been put on it for urinating outdoors as teenagers who e-mail nude photos of themselves. And, of course, many of the falsely accused wind up there. I could see similar problems with a false accuser list, though I guess if we have one we should have the other.
