False reports of sexual assault are very unusual, said Lt. Nancy Dunlap, head of the Minneapolis Police Department's sex crimes unit. They often take more investigative legwork because "you want to make absolutely sure the assault didn't happen," she said.
A more common issue with sexual assault victims is their reluctance to tell police, said Donna Dunn, executive director of the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault.
"This is the time somebody in that position really needs a lot support and help," she said.
