Mother jailed for poisoning child An addict mother who killed her toddler son by poisoning him with drugs has been jailed for three years. Kelly Tugwell, 25, of Gorse Avenue, Chatham, Kent admitted the manslaughter of Robert Williams, known as Junior, who was found dead on 1 August 2004. Croydon Crown Court heard on Thursday that Tugwell was a heroin and Valium abuser. Her son was born a drug addict and was on the "at risk" register. Judge Warwick McKinnon told her she was "unfit to have custody of the child". Tugwell had previously denied the charge but changed her plea on the morning of the trial at Maidstone Crown Court last month. Junior died in his sleep fully clothed, and still strapped in his pushchair from the night before. When paramedics arrived rigour mortis had already set in, the court was told. Tugwell, who had split up with Junior's father days before the child's death, initially tried to blame him and denied any involvement. Toxicology tests showed Junior died from respiratory failure caused by a combination of Valium and an adult dose of the heroin substitute Subutex, which his mother had used to pacify him. Further tests showed he had been give Valium on several occasions. 'Terrible and tragic' "Tugwell did not intend to kill her child but tried to pacify him with drugs repeatedly," said Det Insp Janine Chaney after the case. "This is a terrible and tragic case which has affected many people's lives. She said that the most important outcome was that the authorities would have the power to protect any further children Tugwell might have. Judge McKinnon told Tugwell: "What you did was entirely negligent and dangerous. "I hope you will take the opportunity while you are in custody to get yourself away from drugs."
