Lawyers for Sir Paul McCartney are studying a book by Heather Mills after discovering it may contradict claims she makes in explosive divorce papers.

Documents submitted to the court by the 38-year-old former model, which were leaked to the press, accuse Sir Paul, 64, of being abusive and violent during their four-year marriage.

One of the more bizarre allegations is that Sir Paul refused to allow her to get up in the morning before he was also ready. But in a self-help book by Ms Mills published this year she says that she regularly rises early to gain "me time".

In the court papers her legal team claim: "The Petitioner [Sir Paul] refused to allow the Respondent [Ms Mills] to get out of bed in the morning even though she would wake up early and wish to use the time for essential physiotherapy for her leg and to attend to emails and administrative tasks before the staff arrived or their child woke up."

But in her book Life Balance she writes: "As a working wife and mother I have learnt that setting the alarm 30 minutes earlier each morning can make all the difference. It allows me a little bit of personal space before the day begins.

"I organise everything for breakfast the night before so that I can get it ready without a panic and we can eat together as a family."

The court papers are Ms Mills's response to Sir Paul's petition seeking a divorce on the grounds of her "unreasonable behaviour".

It also emerged today that five crucial documents were missing from the dossier when it was leaked. The pages apparently cast Ms Mills in a bad light.

In another development, it was reported today that she hit her first husband. Her former sister-in-law, Diana Karmal, told newspapers she saw Ms Mills slap Alfie Karmal during a furious row.

As accusations continued to fly, it was also claimed today that Sir Paul has been seeing a psychiatrist. A source close to the singer said: "He has been advised to open up about his feelings as much as he can with his children and remain as upbeat as possible under the circumstances."

Sir Paul's lawyers were also hopeful today that they could also use interviews given by Ms Mills to show her accounts of events are frequently contradictory.

In the court papers Ms Mills also complains that she was "expected to prepare two dinners every night, one for the child of the family and one for the Petitioner", adding: "The Petitioner did not like the Respondent to be assisted in the preparation of his meals, despite her disability".

But in an interview with Michael Parkinson in 2003, Ms Mills praises her husband for "bringing me breakfast in bed every morning, no matter how he feels. And I do the dinner, so weÂ’ve got that agreement. ItÂ’s thoughtfulness".

McCartney has vowed to deny Ms MillsÂ’s allegations "vigorously and appropriately" in court.

In some ways his bad luck is our good luck. He is, after all, a very wealthy, popular man whom the public are likely to support unless his situation becomes impossible. Furthermore he can hire superb, resourceful legal help who can directly go after the lies; possibly aided by private investigations.

With it covering both insane settlement expectations and false allegations used to support them it would provide a high-profile example of a woman being a lying theif and expecting the divorce courts to facilitate that theft.
