As I read this article, I found so many egregious points that I was not sure what, if any, introduction I would provide. The last paragraph, however, helped me make my decision. A man has been released after four years in prison due to the female accuser's finally admitting to not only lying about rape but committing perjury at the trial, and what does the reporter do? He calls the woman the "victim"!!!!! Female accuser should be charged, says lawyer of Haverhill man ... Eagle Tribune - North Andover,MA,USA Female accuser should be charged, says lawyer of Haverhill man cleared of rape conviction By Shawn Regan sregan@eagletribune.com New Hampshire has dropped all charges against Roland "Chris" Chretien of Haverhill, who was convicted in 2004 of sexually assaulting a 46-year-old female customer inside his Plaistow motorcycle shop, Blazin' Saddles on Route 125. Chretien's lawyer said he wants legal action against the woman for lying. Chretien was freed by a federal judge in July, after the woman admitted to lying at Chretien's 2004 trial. He had spent almost four years in prison. At the trial, the woman denied she had previously falsely accused another man of raping her under circumstances similar to the Chretien allegations. New Hampshire Attorney General Kelly Ayotte's office has decided not to challenge U.S. Judge Joseph Laplante's decision freeing Chretien and throwing out the 2004 guilty verdict against him. That left it up to Rockingham County Attorney James Reams' office to either retry Chretien or drop the charges against him. Chretien's attorney, Scott Gleason of Haverhill, said Reams' office has dismissed the original indictment against Chretien. Gleason said Chretien is "deeply appreciative" for the county attorney's swift action. However, Chretien now wants to see criminal perjury charges filed by the county attorney against the woman and her husband, whose courtroom lies sent him to prison, Gleason said. "My client is demanding criminal charges for the perjury that resulted in his financial destruction and him spending four years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit," Gleason said. Gleason said he is in "negotiations for prosecution" of the woman with the county attorney's office. Other options include asking federal authorities to intervene and filing a civil lawsuit for monetary damages against the woman and her husband, Gleason said. "Her husband lied throughout the trial about not knowing his wife was having multiple sexual affairs," Gleason said. "He has since admitted he knew of at least two affairs." At the 2004 trial, Judge Kenneth McHugh refused to allow Chretien's lawyer to ask the woman about her accusations or hold a pretrial hearing to probe the matter. McHugh simply asked the woman whether she had falsely accused another man of sexually assaulting her, and took her word that she had not, Gleason said. However, the victim admitted to the prior false rape accusation at a July 8 federal hearing, at which her son and his roommate were prepared to testify about their knowledge of the matter, according to a 16-page ruling released last month by Laplante, the U.S. judge. The ruling does not mention the woman by name. "It was impossible to determine whether the superior court's refusal to allow Chretien to cross-examine the victim regarding an allegedly false accusation of sexual assault against another man had a substantial, injurious effect on the verdict," Laplante wrote. At the criminal trial, the victim testified she had gone to the motorcycle store to buy a leather belt. She told the judge she lives in a constant state of fear since the assault and that she was struggling through therapy and taking medications as a result of it. How can such injustice and oppression OPENLY go on and on and on, right in front of our eyes? DAMN! Somewhere something HAS to give. It is not possible for things to continue like this in a 'civilized' society. Are there not people reading this news? Why does everyone keep silent? This is the 21st century, such things should NOT be going on.

Mr Regan, I'm down in CT but saw that your article is getting some attention across the country. You may not be aware of this but you are showing incredible bias. A man was falsely accused and jailed for years. But you are still calling his false accuser the victim. The victim is the man here. His life was destroyed by those who lied about him. Thank goodness this did not go on longer. I realize that most likely you disagree with me....but could you at least use the phrase "alleged victim" instead of victim for the woman. Can you imagine the horrors and harm Mr Chretien experienced due to the lies told about him on the stand? HE experienced mental rape if you will, maybe even rape in prison from another inmate. How is he supposed to restart his life now? If the "alleged victim" woman is experiencing issues right now I am sorry to hear that. Haven't you considered that her conscience has been bothering her? And that many clear thinking people now KNOW what she did to another person out of anger? That's the real story here. Stan

Sounds like yet another morally retarded and criminally incompetent judge needs the sack, a good horsewhipping and a long spell in jail.

Got a response from Mr Regan: -----Original Message----- From: SRegan@eagletribune.com To: sjmar cy@a ol.com Sent: Fri, 31 Oct 2008 2:05 pm Subject: Re: Chretian "Rape" Article I do not disagree with you. The woman should have always been referred to as the alleged victim. Not sure how a story that quotes the federal judge's decision about her lying and the defendent's lawyer in detail about his strong feelings on the case is biased against Mr. Chretien. Thanks for the note though. By the way, have you seen the two previous stories I wrote about this? They provide much more detail about the case. Also, as far as I know, the woman has not recanted. The reason the charges were dropped is because her credibility is so damaged that prosecutors can't make a case based on her testimony. And my note back to him: Mr. Regan, Thanks for your response. No, I have not seen the prior articles nor any letters to the editor...I will see if I can track them down on the web site. A point here...this latest article in isolation portrays a different tone than the earlier articles may have expressed. It does come across as biased in isolation which is why I wrote in the first place. I'm a male victim of domestic violence so when I see text that seems to indicate bias it really bothers me. FWIW I always try to let folks know that DV is a people issue as it is 50/50 and 33-38% of those seriously injured are men. Bet you didn't know that...as it is not PC to talk about the whole subject. Rather only male on female violence is covered and funded and written about. See: http://www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm Look in your own paper...when a man attacks a woman the title or text might talk about DV. But if a woman attacks a man...if it even makes the paper (most men do not call the police) then it won't be called domestic violence. In my view if in an intimate relationship someone attacks someone else in it...that is DV. No need to check gender. In my case while trying to get help for my assaults I was falsely accused by my now exe. Nothing at all happened to me from her false charges but they deflected all attention away from what she had done. So I got no help at all, was advised that when she attacks again not to call the police (as they will likely arrest the man due to VAWA) and have PTSD. In my town there are still people who think I attacked her but of the six attacks, ALL were one sided and initiated by a female. Sad. Thanks again for your thoughts and efforts.
