False rape claim charges dropped | |
From 2005: False rape claim charges dropped Quote:
A STUDENT who sparked a huge Garda rape investigation with a false claim had charges against her dismissed yesterday.
Judge Leo Malone agreed in Cork District Court to dismiss the charges against Lorraine Forde (24) after hearing that she was mortified by her fake claims and the waste of Garda time.
The court was told that she deeply regretted her actions and was regarded by gardai as "highly unlikely" to re-offend.
Forde, of Baltimore Road, Skibbereen, Co Cork, had pleaded guilty to making a false rape claim two years ago when she was annoyed at being left outside a nightclub by her friends.
Forde - who was an honours university student - had been refused admission to the club because she had forgotten her identity card.
She had only stayed in Cork on September 27, 2003, because she had missed a bus to take her back to her West Cork home.
On an impulse, Forde decided later that evening to tell her sister and friends that she had been raped - but they immediately alerted the Garda and the student was fearful of telling the truth to gardai who arrived to investigate.
The Garda probe involved 15 officers being assigned to the investigation for almost two weeks.
Forde had pleaded guilty before Judge Malone to making false claims to gardai.
Judge Malone dismissed the two charges after requiring Forde to enter a probation bond for a year.
