False rape charge garda flies home | |
From 2001: False rape charge garda flies home Quote:
THE garda at the centre of a false rape and assault allegation on the holiday island of Tenerife spoke last night of his relief at being home.
The north Dublin-based officer, Garry McEntee, from Threemilehouse, Co Monaghan, flew back into Dublin yesterday afternoon to a tearful welcome from his family and friends.
"I'm just relieved ... relieved to be home. I was looking at Christmas in jail. It was 12 weeks on Friday and I was still waiting."
The 26-year-old garda declined to comment on any aspect of his incarceration in the prison at Santa Cruz, Tenerife's capital.
He said he had received "loads of letters of support" from people while he was held.
He said his family had been well looked after by neighbours in the tightly-knit border community during his ordeal.
He intends to take a week or so off and "just relax" before returning to work.
Last night Mr McEntee's Spanish lawyer confirmed he will today start legal proceedings claiming compensation for the officer's 10-week prison ordeal on wrongful charges of raping and battering a young west of Ireland woman on the holiday island.
