Authorities: Woman may be fined for fake rape story | | From News Journal Online: Quote: Authorities: Woman may be fined for fake rape story
A Deltona woman who didn't want her boyfriend to leave her for
cheating made up a story she was raped and now may have to
pay investigative costs, according to a sheriff's report.
Janel Mextorf, 20, also faces charges of making a false police
report and knowingly giving false information to law enforcement
officers, a Volusia County sheriff's charging affidavit states.
Mextorf's boyfriend called police to report that his girlfriend said
she had been raped, deputies said.
Mextorf said she was taken to some woods near Martin Luther King Beltway and Orange Camp Road on Saturday by a man she had agreed to meet. Mextorf told investigators the man told her to "take her clothes off or he was going to get some girls to beat her." The man punched her and threatened to harm her if she reported the sexual battery to police, the report states.
Mextorf also went to the Rape Crisis Center and a completed rape kit was put in evidence, authorities said.
Then, on Sunday, Mextorf called deputies to say she made a false report.
Mextorf told investigators she initially stuck to her story because she knew her boyfriend would tell everyone she cheated and she did not want to lose him.
Sheriff's investigators filed a charging affidavit with the State Attorney's Office recommending Mextorf be ordered to pay for the six hours of investigation.
"All the time, effort, and money used to investigate the incident Mextorf should also have to pay restitution and write an apology letter to all the personnel involved in the incident," the affidavit states.
