Study: Men end up happier than women

By McClatchy-Tribune Information Services | Monday, August 18, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | U.S./ West Region

SANTA ANA, Calif. - The University of Southern California says in a new study that “women start adult life happier than men, but end up less happy” in later years - a change largely based on shifting feelings about family life and money.

Early on, says the study, “women are more likely than men to be in unions, and this makes for greater fulfillment of both family life and material” goals. But it doesn’t stay that way; as they age, “women are less likely to be in unions” and their sense of happiness declines.

Women tend to experience this turnabout in their late 40s, when men are achieving more of their financial goals, says the study by USC economist Richard Easterlin and University of Cambridge sociologist Anke Plagnol, who earned her doctorate at USC last year.

Their conclusions are based on an analysis of two major national opinion surveys that collectively involved about 21,000 men and 25,000 women. The findings are open to lots of interpretation because thousands of the respondents were not married.

Later in life-post age 30 attractive woman's beauty starts to fade this is when she starts losing her special appeal that grants various special gifts and other freebies. Then her biological clock is ticking hard and she doesn't have much time to fool around anymore and take it easy.

Successful men will make good money and have descent living standards which is appealing to women that would not give them the time of day when they were young. The established men can get the hottest, legally youngest girls. So the tables turn around in the long run.

~ A man needs a woman like a lion needs a stove. ~

~ Women deserve only equal opportunity, not equal outcomes. ~

~ Men are not collectively "guilty" of anything. ~

~ Never needing to be pregnant is a blessing. ~

~ Feminist ideology “men have to respect women, but women have no reason to respect men” ~

~ Everybody makes choices, and nobody should be entitled to special treatment because of those choices.
Equal results based on unequal treatment amounts to no kind of equality at all. ~

Watch the faces of women out shopping or anywhere for that matter. Most look unhappy at all times.
Maybe their expectations are wrong about life?

.

Thomas Jefferson once said "It takes time to persuade men to do even what is for their own good."

Feminuts are stupid, throw some common sense at them. They won't know what hit them.

I have been thinking this for almost a year now. When I listen in public to young girls (14-17), they talk many times of (in no particular order) perfect house, perfect job, perfect car, perfect husband, perfect kids, perfect clothes, perfect body, perfect pet(s), perfect holidays&travel, perfect accessories, perfect life. I am wondering, have they been sold a bill of goods that includes all of this, and when they come to collect their freight, they find an empty boxcar? Was their bill of lading forged? When this happens, I think they die inside, either a little or completely, and from then on become vicious stygian harpies.

I've known many happy men and women, some of them even married! They all seem to have one thing in common: they don't stand upon attempted perfection. It's a house upon sand.

I'd go with that, Tera.

I asked my sister once if a woman with a great career and lot's o' money but not married aged 35 was happy. She said "No."
I then asked the same about a man. She also said "No."

Re: Study: Men end up happier than women in later years

I think maybe the research is being misunderstood.

What it shows is that women have children and are happy and fulfilled while they are young and while they grow.

But the career of childrearing has a shorter life expectancy than a man's career outside the home. So she then enters the workforce for fulfilment.

So women like me, who have raised the children enter the workforce at the same stage we left while the men have used that time we raised the children to get to a place in their career where they are now experts and basically at the top of their profession.

.........

What this shows feminists is the need to have the women sorting out their careers at the same time as raising children so they are able to end up in the same place with their husbands at the same age.

Better childcare is required and less time with raising which is bringing in the goals and laws for men to take half of the load running the household and raising the children.

Very insightful, Julie. I think you may be on to something there!

I think that is half my problem.

I shouldn't really be learning this stuff, I think.

Nothing wrong with acquiring wisdom, it's what you do with it that really counts.

Sure. I have women to care for as well as men.

Just a shame that some are at war with each other.

This is a fallacious generalization Julie.
