Woman jailed for deliberately infecting lover with HIV
13:22pm 19th June 2006
A 43-year-old woman who deliberately infected a man with HIV was jailed today.
Sarah Jane Porter, of Seaton Close, Kennington, south-east London, was sentenced to 32 months at Inner London Crown Court after admitting grievous bodily harm.
Porter will serve half of her sentence in jail and the rest on licence.
One of her victims, a 36-year-old man, said she did not reveal she had HIV and encouraged him into having unprotected sex.
He contacted detectives in May 2005 who tracked down some of Porter's lovers.
One of them, a man aged 31, is HIV positive.
Porter, who refused to help detectives track down her victims, deliberately led these men into a potentially lethal "nightmare", according to Detective Sergeant Brian McClusky.
Forensic tests, carried out during the year-long investigation by the Community Safety Unit at Brixton, south London, proved that Porter was the source.
After the hearing, Mr McClusky said: "Once found, we were then introducing them (her victims) to a potential nightmare.
"We located four victims. One was infected, and the quality of his life has been severely curtailed. But for the others, there was still heartbreak and stress for them and their current partners as they waited for test results.
"It is hard to comprehend how or why Porter set about this deliberate chain of events.
"She gave us no help to identify potential victims throughout the investigation.
"We hope that by bringing this case to prosecution and the sentence handed out today, the victims will feel that justice has been done.
"If it had not been for their support and determination, we would not have been able to build this case."
Some comments (there were only six comments at the time I made this thread):
-----Lock her up and then throw the keys away...
- Mike May, Egham
Thirty two months for handing someone a death sentence? How gracious.
- Steve Webster, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
What will happen when she is released? This stupid and vindictive woman will still be able to go her merry way and maybe start all over again.
- Patrick O'Neill, Hatfield UK
If a man had done this to a woman he'd have got longer.
- Zad, London
By not cooperating with authorities, she continues to commit the crime daily. She must receive the maximum jail term without parole.
- Richard Clarke, USA
Seriously, 32 months? For what boils down to murder. I mean, attempted murder at the very least. What a joke. Hopefully the victims don't sit on this outrage.
- Robert Westman, H.B. USA
So the woman got a measly 32 month ( less than 3 years) sentence, and if I am reading this properly, only half of that will be served in prison.
As one of the commenters accurately put it, it is effectively a death sentence she has given to her victims.
As one of the others commenters said, 'If a man had done this to a woman he'd have got longer'. Spot on.
Justice, eh?

OK, so they found four victims (I believe they are all men, but you can't really trust the media to highlight the fact that a man was a victim).
I remember reading some story a while ago about a man who deliberately infected a woman with HIV.'If a man had done this to a woman he'd have got longer'
I was certain he got a longer sentence than the woman in the above case, so I did a search on the Daily Mail website. Can't remember exactly which case it was, but I knew that a man would get a longer (and harsher) sentence. So I decided to try and prove this.
Some results:

'Five years for man who gave girlfriend HIV'
(One victim)
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1770
'HIV man jailed for infecting lovers
-An HIV carrier who infected two lovers with the "death sentence" virus has been jailed for eight years.'
(Two Victims)
-----
So,
A man who infects one (female) victim gets five years.
A man who infects two (female) victims gets eight years.
A woman who infects at least four (probably male) victims gets 16 months.

I just heard on the radio news that over 2000 people were contacted about this in case they had contracted HIV as a result of her actions.
If the woman had cooperated with the polices' attempts to track down her victims, a lot of time, effort and police resources could have been saved.
She should have gotten even more time for refusing to help the police in my opinion.
A couple more quotes from the daily mail website:
'32 months for what amounts to attempted murder is a joke. I bet if it were a man he would have got 10 years.
- Derek Mior, CZ
If this happened in the US (and because she is female), she would have walked with a few months probation. Women are not required to be accountable for their actions in the States. Thankfully she is serving some prison time in the UK.
