Accused in Tori Stafford slaying pleads not guilty

Three jurors have been chosen so far to serve in the trial of a man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing an eight-year-old girl.
Michael Rafferty, 31, was formally arraigned on Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, sexual assault causing bodily harm and kidnapping in the death of Victoria Stafford.
Tori disappeared while on her way home from school in Woodstock, Ont., on April 8, 2009, and her body was found three months later. Terri-Lynne McClintic, now 21, has already been convicted of first-degree murder in the girl's death.
The whittled-down pool of 116 people were organized into five groups, and they will be asked a series of questions Wednesday and Thursday as a jury of 12 people and two alternates is selected.
Three women were chosen as jurors on Wednesday morning and a second group will be asked the questions later in the afternoon.

I am not sure why CBC felt the need to point out the women on the jury?

    Tori Stafford jury begins deliberations

WARNING: This story contains disturbing details

Jurors are deliberating the fate of Michael Rafferty, the man accused of raping and killing eight-year-old Victoria (Tori) Stafford, after the judge issued his final charge today in a London, Ont., courtroom.
Rafferty, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder, sexual assault causing bodily harm and kidnapping. He has pleaded not guilty. A conviction on the first-degree murder charge would carry a life sentence in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.
Tori disappeared on her way home from Oliver Stephens Public School in Woodstock, Ont., on the afternoon of April 8, 2009. Her partially clothed remains were found more than three months later.
Justice Thomas Heeney told jurors they could find Rafferty guilty or not guilty for sexual assault or kidnapping. However, there are several options when returning a verdict on the murder charge, due in large part to Terri-Lynne McClintic. Two years ago, the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to killing Tori.

I wonder if the judge called the woman a monster for aiding this man and kidnapping the little girl?

Judge calls Tori Stafford killer a 'monster' at sentencing

Michael Rafferty has been sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years, despite his continued claim that he did not commit crimes against Victoria (Tori) Stafford of Woodstock, Ont.
At the sentencing hearing being held in London, Ont., Tuesday, Rafferty was given the opportunity to speak and he told the court, "I firmly stand behind not guilty."
He admitted he played a role in Tori's disappearance, but said he's not guilty of murder, kidnapping, or sexual assault, even though a jury found him guilty on all of those charges on Friday. He offered to meet with Tori's mother, Tara McDonald, to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle so she would know the whole story.
I don't think this will be the last anyone hears of this story.

Convicted killer Michael Rafferty wants taxpayers to pay for his appeal lawyer

LONDON, Ont. - Michael Rafferty has been denied one way to get taxpayers to fund the appeal of his conviction in the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of an eight-year-old girl.So he's trying another.
Sentenced to life last May for the first-degree murder of Victoria ‘Tori' Stafford in 2009, Rafferty was denied legal aid to hire a lawyer in November, the Ontario Court of Appeal confirmed Friday.
But the court also confirmed Rafferty has since made an application under Section 684 of the Criminal Code that "in the interests of justice" the province hire him a lawyer.
That application is in the early stages and Rafferty is far from getting an answer to his request.
But the legal wranglings don't sit well with Tori's mother, Tara McDonald.
"He's already wasted enough of the courts' time as well as taxpayers' money," she said. "He was given a more than fair trial, and now is grasping at desperate straws."
