Re: Why women find it harder working for a Queen Bee than a male boss

    Garak,

I'm a woman and I work alongside men and women in my workplace. And I'm happy at my job. I have a male supervisor and a female executive director, and neither one have shown me any bias. In fact, here's a true story for you that you might find hard to believe but it's the truth nonetheless...

The executive director also happened to be a teacher for the mental health issues class at my college. I took this class from her last year. The teaching of this class (she team-taught it with another woman) was very disorganized. There were complaints made against this woman ....I was one of eleven people who filed complaints... in fact, (here's the part you won't be surprised about...lol)...I was one of the first people to file a complaint. These women are no longer teachers at my college. They also know (not sure who told them) that I was involved in filing a complaint against them. I'm the only one who's name was passed along to them. Though they both were upset about the whole thing, and both lost their jobs....this lady who is now my executive director where I work, hired me anyway less than a year later.

She was able to think about the situation, reconcile with the fact that there was validity to the complaints made against her, and she was able to see past all of this..not hold on to her anger, and she values me as her employee.

    Amazing- yes. But true.

In fact, I have been at my job only a short while compared to a few of my fellow employees, and I just got my first review. It was very positive. I was given a rating of "excellent" for productivity, availability, dependability, and interpersonal relationships...the rest of the categories, "above average." Pretty good for my first ninety days. And have since been given more responsibility. I manage the entire facility, alone, on the days that I work. I've been given an internship.

Not all female bosses are tyrants..and not all are "scary" to work for. Not all are irrational. Not all have the "queen bee syndrome." Some are all of the above...but sometimes, the fear that exists, exists only in the mind of the employee.
Of course, you could be really cynical and imagine that this woman now has you where she can hurt you.

Actually Nivek, the thought has entered my mind.

But in reality, she could have made my life hell in so many different ways so far...and hasn't done so. If she's plotting something, I'd have to say she's doing it with great patience and calculated, quiet caution. We'll just have to see. I can't say that this isn't a possibility. Anything is possible.
