VANCOUVER -- A Richmond, B.C., excavator, who pleaded guilty to assaulting his teenage daughter with a paper towel, was conditionally discharged in B.C. court Thursday.


Judge Ronald Fratkin heard how Dru Douglas Purdy, 43, threw paper towel at his daughter in apparent “horseplay” during a visit to her home in November 2010.
It was the first time he had seen his 13-year-old daughter in three years after separating from his wife in 2007.


His daughter received a cut to the facial area, prompting his estranged wife to call police, court heard.

The judge also heard how the couple’s son died in 1996 from a heart condition, an ailment that Purdy also suffers, affecting both his job and physical capacity.
He will now have to report to a probation officer for six months, Fratkin ordered, and will only legally be able see his daughter with her consent. He must be in the presence of another adult of the girl’s choosing under the conditions.


Purdy must also stay away from his daughter, if she requests.
