Male police officers are facing discrimination at work because of a Government drive to recruit more female officers, the Police Federation has claimed.
The number of female officers has climbed to 36,121 out of 143,770 police officers in England and Wales, according to official figures, a jump of almost 10 per cent in just 10 years.
Home Office chiefs believe that when female officers make up 35 per cent of all police officers - it's so called 'critical mass' point - then they will be 'accepted by men in the workplace'.
They also praise forces which recruited record numbers of women in 2009 like North Wales, which recruited 52 women and just 38 men last year - a massive 58 per cent of the total - and say other forces need to set 'stretching and ambitious targets for female recruitment'.
The report also states that the workplace should be a more female friendly place, saying that private breast-feeding areas should be provided and that bosses should be 'aware of the impact of the menopause'.
But the Police Federation - which represents 140,000 police officers across the 43 forces in England and Wales - warns that the Home Office has 'turned on the tap' of female recruitment, but 'forgotten to put the plug in'.
Ian Rennie, the General Secretary of the Police Federation, says that current policy of encouraging more and more female recruits will backfire if certain safeguards are not put in place to keep them in the job.
He says that in order to reach the 'critical mass' some forces are recruiting 'massively in excess' of that number to keep up with the number of women quitting the force.
Last year the number of female recruits taken on by North Wales Police made up 58 per cent of all new officers, in Humberside 54 per cent, and Warwickshire, 53 per cent.
Mr Rennie said the police officers should be taken on depending on their 'ability to do the job', rather than filling quotas from Home Office chiefs, and that any kind of discrimination - positive or negative - has 'no place' in the police service.
He said today: "The issue for us is that if you turn on the tap and don't put a plug in the sink then you can never fill it up.
"We need to create an environment where women can have a successful career and where female recruits will stay in the service, not leave after a few years."
Mr Rennie said many women leave the service to raise a family and that the police service needs to offer more flexible terms so women can 'have a family life and a police career'.
He says that these concerns have not been addressed and that simply 'upping female recruitment' will not lead to a gender balance, adding: "By simply recruiting more women who are then unable to stay in the service could arguably make matters worse.
"Favouring one group rather than another is unlawful and by setting a target (of 35 per cent women as a critical mass) will inevitably encourage discrimination - and in this case discrimination against men."

It's amazing how businesses and such all have to change to accomodate women... but when men have families to help raise, well, that's just unfortunate that they have to choose between their family and their career.

Funny...If it weren't so serious.
This fool is speaking about female-friendly environments being neccesary to keep them working. Remember the 12 months maternity leave? That's female friendly I suppose, nevertheless they are a year NOT at work.
Besides being sexist and moronic, female-friendly attitudes toward work is highly counter-productive.

How can you have a 'female friendly environment' when you are fighting crime ?
Will there be an 'education' campaign to convince burglars and muggers, car thieves and coke-dealers to be nice to women police officers and 'come along quietly' when asked?

Truth be told, male cops have done all to well to enforce crooked laws against men. Perhaps, this is partially what we need to happen. I mean, people dislike the gov't and people dislike cops... when there is a rise in female cops then perhaps people won't view them in rose colored glasses?
When I do this, and I know I will, it will be comparable to the lame learning to walk, the blind being enabled to see and the suffocated breathing again. The sky isn't the limit; there are no limits.

A complete lose-lose situation all round really.
Vast recruitment and training costs to keep replacing all the women, female police officer not fit for the job, men losing out on a career they'd be great at, and perhaps most importantly of all vicitms of crime being failed.
The levels of fitness required for female officers is quite ridiculous. Managed to find them here:

Basically men have to be able to lift a weight of 69kg vs 39kg for women!
In terms of cardio-vascular activity a 50 year old female gets 18 minutes to run 1.5 miles - that's nothing more than a brisk walk! For comparison a male officer even of 59 would be expected to be 3 and a half minutes ahead of her! (i.e. he actually has to run or at least jog constantly throughout the entire distance!).
I mean which of these officers is going to catch a criminal in a chase? Even if the female officer manages to get lucky and say trip him up or corner him, if she can barely lift 39kg they wouldn't be able to detain a puppy never mind a human being.Last edited by johnkimble1; 12th-March-2010 at 06:50 AM.

Mark my words….once a series of FemCops get shot down in the line of duty…things will change.
The US has many, many women in our Military. And very few actually in the heavy action.
This leads to lower effectiveness in the violent crime areas.
I'm not talking about "Lovely Rita Meter Maid" positions in law enforcement.

OK then, lets have the female recruits undergo the same standards of fitness and physical training as the males.They also praise forces which recruited record numbers of women in 2009 like North Wales, which recruited 52 women and just 38 men last year - a massive 58 per cent of the total - and say other forces need to set 'stretching and ambitious targets for female recruitment'.
Only then, can you sort the wheat out from the chaff.
A career like law enforcement is not something that someone goes into on a whim, you need to be dedicated.
To say after a few months "Oh but it's too hard!", wastes everybodies time and money.
If you can't make the grade, don't bother applying in the first place.
One other thing, I note a comment about breast-feeding facilities in police stations, this makes me wonder what on earth a lactating mother is doing at work and who is looking after her child when she is out on a job.
I mean if you are charged with protecting your local community, you can't (or shouldn't be allowed to) say "Oh I can't go to that emergency, I have to feed my baby in 10 minutes"
A situation like that would be lunacy defined.

Women are extremely poor at adapting to the environment they are in. Instead they insist on the environment adapting to suit them.
Thus the police force has to change to suit what they want - discrimination in their favour, easy recruitment criteria, flexible and part-time working around their personal lives, uniforms adapted so they can look chic and fashionable, tons of paid leave (i.e. money for nothing) and baby facilities on the job (i.e. instead of the job). It's what women try to do to every profession they enter.
And despite all that, they still give up in droves after a couple of years because they can't hack even their simplified and wussified version of the work.
Meanwhile of course the efficiency of the police force goes down the drain, along with millions of our taxes.
But the Home Office wants to see more and more of this ridiculous pandering to female whims and female waste, all at our expense. They won't be satisfied until the police service is one huge creche full of yakking women feeding babies, painting their nails and complaining about how hard done by they are, while the criminals run riot outside. And that will be all men's fault, of course.
