    And if being provided for and whatever is the best deal ever, why not vote for socialized everything?
    I am talking about all of those things that women need from a man in order to have offspring that thrive. A house, running water, a stable income, upward mobility in society (an ambitious man), labor and toil and industry, the list goes on and on. A man will only go to these lengths if he is somehow assured that the child he is providing for is indeed his.
    In order to get men to do this, women, and society had to come up with a device that quelled his ambivalence towards the little rug rats scurrying around about his feet. That device is called marriage, a device ubiquitous across all cultures in one form or another.
    Along with the male responsibility of providing and protecting for the family there was also a female responsibility of not "straying" as it were. So, severe social punishments were put in place for anyone who cheated. In ancient Egypt the penalty was death. This went for both men and women as when a man sired a child with another man’s wife that cause problems just as bad and society frowned on that just as much.
    Not sure where you get the whole socialism thing here.

    I know the history of marriage and I know it's importance. It's just that you portrayed that being provided and protected for is all sugar and spice, while the provider and protector has only risks and responsibilities. Isn't it the same in socialism? You get provided by the welfare state and you have no responsibilities. So if it is so good, why fight against it?

    The assurance that a man is caring for a child that is his is central to his security and is what has made civilization possible. I'm not exaggerating! Think about it; from the paperclip on your desk to the air handling system in the building you work at or live to the car you drive, just about all of these things came to be because men collectively were providing for children that they were somehow assured were theirs. This is what marriage was for originally. Not to "subjugate" a woman but rather to offer a mutually beneficial deal. One in which the woman had a provider and protector and the man had some chance of having thriving offspring that could carry on his legacy. The role of provider and protector was not a privileged one despite what feminists will have you think. It was one of great risk and responsibility. Think about the early cave dwellers when you had a woman who lived in the metaphorical “Cave” and a man who went out and risked his life to bring back food trying his best not to get eaten by saber tooth tigers and on the occasion that he might not have a productive hunt may not be able to have access to reproduction. The woman could choose a protector and provider but had to give some assurance that she was going to be faithful. So, we developed social taboos for infidelity for BOTH men and women and this was called Marriage. For real! That’s what it was and still is-for the man. Now with absolutely no respect for the idea of marriage a woman can reproduce with whomever she wants and still expect the better provider to do his job as long as she is successful in deceiving him.
    In today’s social environment paternity testing is the only way that men can be assured that they children they are raising are his. This is good for EVERYBODY except women who seek to avoid accountability. Unfortunately accountability is something that far too many women today want to avoid at all costs. They call it oppression.

    neat !!!

    I will put this translation in my feminit wimyns' PC cant lexicon

    accountability = oppression

    right on with wimyn it is all about "choice" other folk get their invvoices

    If you are talking about how the state has taken place of the husband and made the role of a man in the life of his children unnecessary in the eyes of many people I could not agree with you more.
    However, where I live, you as the "father", whose role has been much maligned, are still responsible if paternity has been established through marriage and not necessarily biological fact. There are men in jail right now who couldn't pay child support for children that were not theirs.

    No, I mean, if being provided for is so awesome, why do any men oppose socialism? That will render everyone without responsibilities and risks and you said that women had it great. Why shouldn't everyone have it great? Obviously, this has an inherent loss of liberties, just like in your case.
