This proves nothing, Luke.pooh-poohing an idea is not the same as debunking it. Mockery and name calling may convince and intimidate some people, but it accomplishes nothing academically or factually.

Isn't the problem with conspiracy theories that they are impossible to prove? I mean you could spend a lifetime spinning elaborate scenarios that can't be validated in any scientific or legal way. It's a fun game, but how useful is it? Is it "history lite" for non-specialists?

I agree that some skeptics just enjoy deflating others' balloons. But the tools of skeptical inquiry can be pointed in any direction. What is wrong with asking tough questions, and demanding robust evidence?

Forums like this are asking probing questions about feminism, political correctness and media misrepresentations. We are using the tools of skepticism against our chosen targets. That doesn't mean we still don't believe in things like love, truth, justice and honour.

First of all Tom, thanks for asking intelligent questions and making respectable comments. It gets old hearing the "crazy people" comments unaccompanied by cogent discourse.

To answer your questions, conspiracy theories are not "impossible to prove." Historians, researchers, scientists and officials adhere to conspiracy theories. Regarding 9/11, there are plenty of "specialists" who don't adhere to the government/Popular Mechanics version of events. Research shows other buidlings have been gutted by fires that lasted 3 hours, 10 hours, 17 hours, etc. and yet remained structurally intact. Why did the twin towers completely implode after 60 minutes of burning?

We conspiracy realists do ask tough questions and demand robust evidence. That's the point. Maybe we don't agree with each other on everything, but we agree that the government version of events on many issues is not only often wrong but often is wrong for the purpose of manipulating the masses.

On the issue of 9/11, the only "question" ever asked is, "Do you honestly think the government would do something like that to its own people?" The implication is that if you do, you are unpatriotic. Well, yes I do honestly believe that my own government would do such a thing to its own people. It wouldn't be the first time a government did such a thing to its own people.

I disagree that the media downplay conspiracies. The popularity of The X-Files and Oliver Stone's JFK show how common it is now for people to distrust authorities. The post-war "youth rebellion" culture is still being used to sell all kinds of stuff.

I would argue that the mainstream encourages belief in right-wing conspiracies, specifically the feminist crap about white men oppressing everything in sight. Everything connected with conservatism has been painted as negative: patriotism, religion, family values, capitalism, masculine virtues etc.

If anyone thinks that their Government would not harm or kill them, just look up at the sky everyday and occasionally you will see the “Chemtrails” for yourself.

I live in York in the UK and I now see “Chemtrails” over York about once every three weeks.
