IronLady your story is an important one. The essence of which is an 85yr old WW2 veteran who fought in some of the most horrific campaigns of WW2 is indigent and dying on the street. Only when he is on the verge of death does society stumble on him, scoop him up and offer him help. I wonder how may 80+ yr old WW2 vets have died alone on the street fighting their last battle. 95% of those living on the street are men and few seem to care, if it were 95% women there would be outrage from the powers to be.
The other important part of this story is your kindness, concern and compassion.

The hospice called me at 3 Pm Eastern time today, to inform me that my cousin Marvin, passed away peacefully at 2:28 PM.
I want to thank everyone who expressed their support and prayers for him. God bless all of you!
Marvin, I hardly knew you. I wish I could have known of your situation sooner. But this tribute is for you and all vets of your generation: the Greatest Generation..

He led a lonely last part of his life, Annette, and must have known despair. But he dies knowing that someone cared.
You did well.

What an amazing story, Annette. I'm so glad they called you instead of his brother. Thank you for sharing this story with us, I think it's a wonderful tribute to man who gave very much and seemed to recieve very little in return.
"Every noble impulse, every unselfish expression of love; every brave suffering for the right; every surrender of self to something higher than self; every loyalty to an ideal; every unselfish devotion to principle; every helpfulness to humanity; every act of self-control; every fine courage of the soul, undefeated by pretense or policy, but by being, doing, and living of good for the very good’s sake—that is spirituality." -David O. McKay
