A baby boy was in critical condition in a Winnipeg hospital Sunday after being stabbed at a Shaughnessey Heights public housing complex.
Paramedics and police were called to an apartment at the Gilbert Avenue complex in the city's north end around 4 p.m. Saturday.
Witnesses said three adults emerged from a residence at the complex with an eight-month-old baby boy in tow.
Alicia Moar said the adults appeared to be fighting and the baby was bleeding heavily.
"I ran inside to get a towel and I just came back and the baby had a really big gash over his head.... It was big. You could tell it had lost a lot of blood," Moar said.
Moar said a man was holding the baby as a woman tried to get it away from him. Another woman was trying to stop the struggle because the child's injury was so severe.
A man and a woman, who residents identified as the child's parents, were arrested and taken away by police.
The Winnipeg police child abuse unit is investigating.
More details on the case are expected from police by Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place just metres from where 14-month-old Vanessa Houle had her head repeatedly bashed into a sidewalk earlier this month. Police said Houle had just been abducted by a woman who attacked her.

An eight-month-old Winnipeg boy remains in hospital in critical condition after being stabbed near one of his eyes, allegedly by his father, Winnipeg police said Sunday.
Police said the child may have suffered brain damage as a result of being caught in the middle of a domestic argument that turned horribly violent.
Paramedics and police were called to an apartment at the Gilbert Park housing complex in the city's Shaughnessy Heights neighbourhood around 4 p.m. Saturday.
Witnesses said they noticed the child was hurt after three adults they identified as the father, mother and an aunt emerged from the building carrying him.
Winnipeg police said Sunday their investigation so far has revealed the 23-year-old father and the baby's 29-year-old mother were arguing when the man took "a common household object" in their home and swung it in the direction of the woman, who was holding the baby at the time.
The father is charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and two counts of failing to abide by the conditions of a prior release from police custody.
History of domestic trouble
Const. Jason Michalyshen said the couple has a history of police involvement.
Police said the breaches relate to an Aug. 20 incident where the father allegedly used a weapon to assault the woman. He was ordered to have no contact or communication with her nor to go to her residence in Gilbert Park. The charge against him is still pending, police confirmed.
The 23-year-old is currently being detained, police said.
Electronic court records show the mother applied for a restraining order against the man in February but the application was dismissed. No reason was given for the refusal.
Alcohol may also have been a factor that led to the dispute, police said.
Alisha Moar and Lauren Molinski, both 16, said they saw the adults arguing and tried to help the baby.
"I ran inside to get a towel and I just came back and the baby had a really big gash over his head," said Moar, who lives in the area.
There are reports the Winnipeg police's child abuse unit is investigating the status of another child who was in the apartment at the time.
The incident happened about 100 metres from the spot where a 14-month-old girl had her head smashed into a sidewalk numerous times on Sept. 1.
A 19-year-old woman was charged in that attack, which left the girl with non-life-threatening injuries.
