I'm in a position where the love between my daughter and me is sometimes the only stock and trade I have to offer, and the position I take is that it is enough. Surprisingly to both her parents, this is difficult to refute in any final way.

I actually find offensive this socioeconomic role laid out for men even among non-feminists, the idea that what we are worth is what we "provide", and the whole image of Daddy "coming home" suggests that he has been sent from his home by the presumption that the workplace, instead of alongside his children, is where he belongs to begin with.

It may well be that the self-destruction of feminism has its roots in the claim that women can better provide by being "out there" (a place I never really wanted to be any longer than necessary anyway). As we were marginalized into preposterous getups with leashes around our necks, and a place on a morning train, by a system that never had men's parental roles at heart any more than women's, I say let them get on the treadmill and try to retain their humanity like we have had to do. Personally the idea of spending all day with children without a mommy around to coddle and confuse them sounds pretty appealing, and having done my share of both, I know full well which role I prefer.

If men want to get back to being heads of household, then maybe having the household as something besides a hotel at the end of a long and degrading day at the millstone is the beginning of that.
