Today, I learnt that in a 2006 article written by Katy Guest for The Independent, the UKMM are described as:

"A bonkers group"

Dictionary.com defines "bonkers" as:

mentally unbalanced; mad; crazy.

And here is the paragraph in which the UKMM are mentioned:
