Over on Feministing.com, our opponents are bemoaning the latest figures from an Oxford study which reveal that in the UK, the Indian population has been aborting female babies at a higher rate than male babies. The question was asked, I imagine with a straight face, "What would a solution to this problem look like?"

In the ensuing comments, one person suggested not that abortion be restricted, but that abortion be discouraged for female babies by issuing tax credits for the act of delivering the baby. We're not talking about tax credits for raising the child, just tax credits for having and not aborting a girl.

Amazingly, some of the commenters believe this is a way to fight patriarchy -- to abort more boys while welcoming more girls. In other words, figure out how to manipulate a cultural sickness by utilizing the power of the state as a coercive tool, to achieve some desired end.

Will these ideologues never understand? Or is the problem that they perfectly understand?

Sick. Seems noone suggest completely banning abortion and impoing tough penalties on those who kill the unborn.

getting tax credits for having girls?! - how can someone look at that and not see how fucked up that is, but the feminists are using the abortion of females as a scapegoat for this.

Wouldn't work. Given the culture it would probably simply result in more female babies being dumped at the curb.

A better solution would be both contraception and to make the economy there better so that there would be less reason to kill babies in the first place.

I would say that if the fetus isn't a person, then it shouldn't be referred to as a girl. It should only be referred to as an it. Therefore, since it is just an it, I don't see why feminists are so upset.

I can see it now...a feminazi talking with a woman wanting to abort her daughter:

These are Indian immigrants, they bring Asian attitudes. In the west it's more likely that the number of boy babies being aborted will gradually rise. Girls after all do better in school and are less of a handful.

There is a reason why feminists make such a big deal of abortion: it puts women in control of the species. This all about power.

So what are feminists going to do when the artificial womb is invented? I read somewhere that the most conservative estimate is that we are something like 15 years away from perfecting an artificial womb which can contain a human fetus.

I doubt that the public will continue to allow them the right to kill the child when it can simply be transferred to an artificial womb.

The way things are going, 15 years from now women will pretty much control the political bodies and that means also scientific funding and legislation. I'm sure they'll will produce "research' that 'proves' that the use of artificial wombs is bad for the development of the child. Hence: not allowed. Sorry. Have a nice day.

The point is though, contraception is not part of the issue at all, they just want boy babies!

Also, the economy makes no difference, its a cultural preferrence..
