There is a blog, http://miss-andrist.livejournal.com/ , that I have been campaigning to get shut down. The petition is here.

Our good friend Rob Case has been commenting on this on my blog.

After some enquiry, Rob recieved this reply from Livejournal:

'Thank you for your report. While the content in question may be disturbing and in poor taste, it does not constitute a violation of the LiveJournal Terms of Service. The content posted is simply an opinion, and we allow the expression of a wide range of opinions on LiveJournal. As long as the content does not explicitly encourage others to harass or physically harm any particular racial, ethnic, or social minority, it is considered allowable.'

Rob commented thus;

'Well, we’re now in a position to put Livejournal in an uncomfortable dilemma.
Miss-andrist’s opening posting, in which she states all men are evil, that she hates them and that all other women should too, could be copied and wherever the word ‘men’ occurs, swap it with ‘women’. This could then be the opening posting of a new blog at Livejournal called Miss-Ogynist.
It won’t be long before complaints start rolling in from femmies, but so long as MissAndrist’s original text is kept to - which we know has been cleared by LiveJournal - then it’s win-win. If LiveJournal are consistent and protect this new Miss-Ogynist, then freedom of speech has been tested and upheld. If LiveJournal fold and close the site down, then we have documented proof of a blog host that practices discrimination against men and one that can be named and shamed with great abandon about the net.'

Dood, this is gonna be hard. I'm on it.

Two points:

Isn't it typical that this excuse is trotted out so easily. "They have a right to their opinion".

But they don't consider what constitutes an opinion.

If the 'opinion' expresser has not done the work of examining all the evidence, studying the relevant issues, reading all the arguements and literature, weighed up all the pros and cons, subjecting all to critical analysis and sound judgement against non-ego-bound criteria etc, then all they are doing is expressing their prejudice.

And there is a huge difference between opinion and prejudice.

It is a moral issue. Intellectual honesty.

Seemingly LiveJournal's owners fail at that hurdle themselves.

Secondly, why would we want to shut down someone's blog? The more prejudice and vitriol they express, the more ammunition they hand to us. If freedom of speech is to mean anything, then we must put up with the loonies as well as the philosophers. Ok, I will concede that there are a lot of loonies in the world. But shutting down someone's blog gives precedent for other's blogs to be shut down too just because they have content that is disagreeable to someone.

Perhaps we should have a discussion of freedom of speech here. It is an age old issue, worth continually being considered.

Wait a minute.

You need to call it Mr. Misogynist rather than Miss-Ogynist because they might find it more socially acceptable for women to hate women than for men to hate women.

And thus they might not delete a blog that is written by a woman who hates women, whereas they would delete a blog where the author is a man who hates women.

Oh.

And where she uses the word "feminist", you're going to want to use the word "masculist". This is because if they shut it down, we're going to have side-by-side screenshots of both sites, showing that the two sites were the same, only with the genders reversed.

Now the general public is probably going to look at these side-by-side screenshots during our shaming campaign, and not all of them will know what "MRA" is, but all of them with a brain will be able to logically conclude that "masculist" is the opposite of "feminist".

Too true. By revealing themselves as hate-mongering biggots, they're saving others the trouble of doing it for them.

Okay first things first: Somebody should be taking screenshots right about now because you never know, Livejournal might even kick us off for just that first post.

Secondly, and very importantly, she has the Scum Manifesto posted on her "Miss-Andrist" blog. Not just a link to it, but the actual text.

I can guarantee you that if we take that thing and change "men" for "women" and "women" for "men", and post it on Mr_Ogynist, we'll get kicked off of Livejournal for sure.

We'll call it "SCUW", or something like that.

I can just imagine it:

And then of course when they kick us off we'll just point out that they are hypocrites because they allowed a text on the Miss-Andrist blog with the same text just with "men" and "women" reversed.
