It may well be possible to decriminalize prostitution, or, make it a low police priority (it probably already is a low police priority) without encouraging greater prostitution activity.

Me personally I don't think anything of prostitution because I am celibate and sex doesn't mean a damn thing to me!!

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
Two of the most FUTILE things for the state to attempt to do are..
1. Stop people taking drugs.
2. Stop them having sex.
It will NEVER succeed!!
The two things are related in that they activate the pleasure centres of the brain, and one of the things humans do is SEEK PLEASURE!!
Drugs, often cause great damage and folk stop taking them when the consequences get dire..
Often, the consequences have to get EXTREMELY DIRE before they realise they have to "say no".. But sometimes it is just a simple matter of moving out of the environment where drugs seem to be the way of dealing with things.. E.G. I have read reports of vietnam war soldiers, upon return to the US after the war, giving up their drugs habits that they had when in Vietnam, because it was no longer compatible with thier new environment..
Realising that drugs are making one ill, is only half of the battle, the other half is having something to replace the need for drugs.. This can often come in the form of, for example, a relationship, such as a new partner etc..
Sex, while not totally criminalised, has similar "addictive" qualities, but does not in itself create "dependancy" as such, it does not "damage" people in the same way.. (Unless they catch something nasty!!)
But it still affects the mind and creates the craving, (especially if one is manic for whatever reasons, sex creates a high that further fuels the mania..)
Prostitutes will probably be required to fulfill most maniacal needs for sex, as regular partners will likely succumb to "induced pyschosis" and end up in a bad state of mental health themselves..
I dread to think what the average psychotic sex beast would gravitate towards in the absence of those darlings on the streets..
The sheep on the moors would be at risk, for sure!
Drugs can be used to stabilise the psychotic person, but such drugs also dampen down the entire person, rendering them unable to do anything of any use..
Anti-psychotics are also very potent Anti-work drugs!!
I doubt very much that legalising prostitution would NOT lead to increased indulgence though, as the shaming mechanisms seem to work very well so far..
Remove the shame from the "sex punter" and he will happily indulge !!
For evidence of this, I point to the many men I know who will only have sex with prostitutes in countries where it is legal..
However, they will happily take drugs in the UK, even though they know it is illegal and they risk serious penalties..
I think, drug taking is regarded as a "non offence" or something..
I know many a cokehead who will snort away happily, but will not consider picking up street walkers..
Different thing, for some reason..
I wonder, what is better, getting a criminal record for drug use?
Or for picking up whores?

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
Well, if your drug of choice happens to be something harder than marijuana, and you get busted (even with a tiny amount), you've got a felony on your record. Convicted felons lose many constitutional rights...can't vote, can't bear arms, and have to deal with the stigma long after they've paid the penalty. (The penalty being jail time and a fine that runs into the couple of thousands.) And, most people don't want to hire someone who has a felony on their record. Doesn't matter if it's ten years later and you've been clean for all those ten years...it's still there...will always be there...even an expungement doesn't truly erase a felony conviction. On the other hand, if you get busted for prostitution, or patronizing a prostitute (which is highly unlikely in the first place), in WA state, it's a misdemeanor, meaning you might get a small fine and that's it. No record...no jail time..no taking away of your constitutional rights. So you ask, which is worse? The way things are now, a drug conviction is much worse than a charge having to do with prostitution. Just the way it is.

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
There will be drugs from now until the very end!
There will always be dope fiends, criminals, slanderers, accusers, whore mongers and war mongers until the very end! Any laws that try to ban fornication is inexcusably PATHETIC!!! PEOPLE HAVE SEX, ANIMALS HAVE SEX EVEN THE DAMN INSECTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
I think I understand what you're getting at Haahoo...it's not the penalties, per se, that you're comparing it's the motives for each (drug use vs. prostitution). Is that correct? You may have a point there...both activities are pleasure seeking devices, aren't they. Both can be psychologically addictive. Psychological addictions can be very, very strong. However, drug addiction is stronger, I think, because it also involves a physiological addiction. A true addict is someone who's body goes into physical withdrawals (which in some cases can even cause death) if the drug is not kept at a certain level inside the body. That makes it a little bit different, I think.
Interesting side note: the most dangerous (life-threatening) withdrawals addicts can go through are from alcohol and benzos, both which ironically, are legal drugs.

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
Yes, no one ever sufferred "withdrawal" effects from not having sex for a while!! (maybe a bit of depression?)
Much of the "desire" for sex is perhaps a desire for human companionship with the sexual element..
But for the prostitutioin issue, it seems that banning it HAS reduced it.. (or, as in recent decades, POLICING the bans)..
For a long time, the police turned a blind eye to "the trade", then, round about the late 80's (I remember it well!!) they started to "clamp down"..
Now, there is nothing like the street trade that there used to be..
With drugs, what effect has it had banning drugs?
Just created more problems than anything else..
There seems to be no difficulty in getting drugs and no shortage of folk lining up to get them..
Criminal record or not, seems that drug users are going to take them anyway..
In the UK, picking up a whore is a criminal offence.. Same as stealing a bicycle (apparently)..

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
Has prostitution really decreased, or, have prostitutes (and those promoting prostitution) just found more creative ways to carry on the business? It would be interesting to know. If it has decreased, maybe criminalizing it has had a deterring effect. Drug offenses, however, are likely not to decrease so much, because being busted doesn't stop the addiction. You're right, many addicts will go right back out and use again until they get caught again, and many will do things for the money they need to support their habit which aren't always legal things...and so the cycle keeps going...recidivism is high for this group of people. Treatment is one thing that's been shown to work..even if it's still not very highly effective, it's more effective for reducing recidivism than incarceration alone.

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
Our language construction can bring us undone. No woman 'gives it away for free'. There is always a price/cost. Ignore it at your peril.......or perhaps it is easier to find women who give it away for free than it used to be!
The quick shag with a woman who seemingly 'gives it away for free' is soon followed by blue uniformed thugs banging through the door with a rape accusation neatly typed out in hand. She extracts her price in humiliation and punishment. There may be more 'easy lays' about but the False Accusation rate has soared.

Re: Prostitution in Sweden.....
Having sex with a drooling whore is not worth it.
Any self respecting man will tell you that the primary objective of any whore is to lie, fuck and steal!!
