Cause for Action: Strategy 2004 - 2008 Download 'A Cause For Action' as a PDF Following years of neglect, prostate cancer - the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the United Kingdom - is now experiencing unprecedented public, political and media interest. There is now a real sense that for prostate cancer as a cause, the time has come, but major challenges lie ahead. With the five year strategy now in place, the Charity - the largest and most comprehensive of the voluntary organisations focused on this field - aims to lead the way in prostate cancer campaigning for much needed improvements. A Cause for Action sets the direction for The Prostate Cancer Charity for 2004 to 2008. It explains the principles underpinning the Charitys decision making and lays out the specific goals we want to achieve over the next five years to improve the lives of people affected by prostate cancer. The strategy focuses on six key areas: Research We will prioritise and progressively increase research spend, becoming an increasingly significant and respected player. Support and information We will aim to be the leading provider of authoritative, evidence-based information to people affected by prostate cancer - in print, online, by telephone and through its network of prostate cancer specialist nurses. Professional development We will seek to influence professional practice within the UK in relation to the management of prostate cancer, bringing a focus on the user perspective. Policy development We will develop and publish policies and policy statements on key prostate cancer issues. Campaigning We will become an increasingly effective campaigning organisation. Regional development We will harness the power of integrated national and local effort in developing a movement for change across the UK. http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/pdf/cause_for_action.pdf | |||

About The Prostate Cancer Charity Prostate cancer was for so long a neglected health issue - neither understood by the public nor prioritised by politicians. By any dimension, prostate cancer simply didnt register on the radar screen. It was against this background that The Prostate Cancer Charity was set up in 1996. In its relatively short life, the Charity has played a key role in raising both public awareness of the disease and political debate about services and support... and there is now a real sense that for the cause of prostate cancer, the time has come. We are the largest and most comprehensive of the charities focused specifically on prostate cancer. We aim to provide hope for tomorrow through the research that we fund - and practical support for today through our extensive - and growing - information services. Over recent years we have invested nearly £5 million in vital medical research and supported thousands of men and their families. Our contact with so many people whose lives have been directly affected by prostate cancer, feeds into all we do, giving us a real breadth of knowledge to underpin our work. Our vision is to achieve for men, in relation to prostate cancer, what has so successfully been achieved for women and breast cancer. Our goals are set out clearly in our five-year strategy, A Cause for Action. I count it a real privilege to be part of a movement that is pioneering changes in the priority accorded to mens health. We will be increasing our efforts over the coming months and years to ensure that prostate cancer is placed, and stays, where it belongs - on the national health agenda. I want us to be key players in a movement for change, engaging men with prostate cancer, their families and friends, and all those with an interest in the disease, in securing significant improvements in services and support. We are here to make a difference. I do hope that you will find this website helpful, whatever your interest may be in prostate cancer... and, of course, we will always welcome suggestions for improvement. Please join us. John Neate, Chief Executive.
