I recently saw something about the health service in the UK. Public Sector Staff are now trained to ensure children are not presumed to have parents of opposite genders (e.g. never asking a child about its "mother and father" )..

It is of course highly offensive to gay couples, who have children..????

In the old days, if a perons asked about a child's "mother and father" in any respect, to be answered by the child "I don't have a mother and/or father..." the person asking would in response say "Oh, I'm sorry, well what about other relatives then?"
I guess this avoids having to apologise for 'putting your foot in it' (which, *shock* happens everyday in this place we call 'life') and serves a secondary purpose of avoiding the need to express any sympthy that a child is void of either maternal or paternal love, as a double-dose of either is 'just as good' (though, naturally in today's femcentric world, it would obviously be preferable to have a double-dose of maternal influence - but anything is better than both).

This is nothing new - at least that's what I was told by my Swedish language instructor (she of course lived in Sweden for quite some time). She once said at our lessons that in Sweden they have to constantly change the name of the institution that deals with immigrants. Because every time the new word they use to call them, gets negative connotation very fast. So the PC police does it's very best to make all "negative energy" go away. Needless to say, their best doesn't do, because merely changing the word does not change how people feel about the immigrants (or whatever they call them at the moment) that flood the country.

Like I said, I can't provide any sources, it's just something I was told, take it for what it's worth.

Sounds a bit like when mentally or physically disabled people were called spastics and it was considered an acceptable term.
It soon got a negative connotation so the name had to be changed to 'handicapped' or whatever term they came up with.

The best example i know was when the natives of the falkland islands where termed "Bennies" (after the dimwitted UK soap star of "Crossroads") by the British soldiers there..

Of course, they were admonished and told not to use this derogatory term..

So, they started to refer to them as "stills"..

When asked why, it was answered..

"Because they are still Bennies.."..
