i hope the men stood back so the women could do their jobs.

I doubt it, those men are always selfishly rushing ahead of women and not given the women a a fair chance.

My erudite and literary friend Amfortas has written, at DDB's insistence, a follow-up Femibird book 'for children' on the Fire Station.

It is in the same format and DDB has painted pictures to go with it. The book has 12 text pages and an introduction page and a face page.

What you see above is the last painting.

The text is full of topical items (like the F4Js on Harriets roof) and EOC directed firewomenpersons taking over, lots of sexual innuendo and many references to women's special qualities, like map reading and wet t-shirts and changing tyres. All in 2500 words !

What we need is someone who can put it all together in a powerpoint presentation, like the Policeman, (or something similar) so we can either disseminate it around the internet or have it published.

Can anyone do powerpoint?

It's bloody funny you should bring this up.
Last week, I had a rare day off and the local fire brigade had a call-out after some idiot lit a fire in the back of the local Work and Income offices here in town.
By Work and Income I mean Dole office, lumped in with Child and Family Services, in the same building.
We got there and the place was full of smoke, the alarm was screaming, but no-one had the sense to actually get out of the building, one woman there was frantic, because she couldn't find her hand-bag.
There were 12 women in this building at the time of us getting there, that is when the argument started.
I referred to my pump operator (Eamonn Hooper) as Senior Fireman Hooper, (which is his rank btw) and wind the pump up and get some water from a nearby hydrant.
I was lambasted by one of the W&I workers, a very large lady, for calling Eamonn a fireMAN, I was put in my place, stating that the correct term is now Fire-fighter.
I was dumb-struck, I told her that when we get our first female Fire-fighter, I will change my use of terms.
That was not good enough, I was told that I must change NOW, as would you believe it, this is how family violence begins.
Bugger me, is it that simple?
I later apologised to Eamonn for beating his family up, he was as confused as me.

'Equity to a fault'

Editor -- Jackie Speier's plea for more women in politics (Open Forum, "Women in California are at a critical juncture," March 22) is pathetic at best, considering the obvious agenda of many female politicians.

I've lived in the Bay Area a short time and observed an "equality to a fault" approach, especially regarding civil service.

For example, Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White is an embarrassment to career women such as myself. She has made a mockery of the SFFD by putting quality firefighters and civilians in danger by allowing under-trained captains and chiefs on the fire-ground.

She refuses to publish the results of a recent captain's test until she gets the results she wants; more women at the top of the list.

In a recent meeting, she admitted to "re-evaluating our expectations" regarding the recent test. Experienced Caucasian men are overlooked for promotion, creating dissidence in the ranks.

I'd wait my turn, pay my dues and climb the ranks with the respect of my crew. How else could I expect them to trust me on the fire-ground?
