Open Question: Are you proud to be an American?
From Yahoo Answers
Though I am Dominican-American (my parents are both Dominican) I proudly call myself an American. I was born and raised here. I am also gay and even though we are still fighting for full equality here I'm glad I can still be myself in this country and not be prosecuted or hanged. Though this country is not perfect, it is my home. Even with the "Don't ask and don't tell policy" I will forever love & appreciate it for the opportunities & rights it has bestowed upon me. You?

Re: Open Question: Are you proud to be an American?
Sure, I am pround to be an American. I am also proud to be tall, white, male, from Texas, and any number of other things over which I was born into with no control whatsoever.
Actually, I am just being sarcastic, but of that I really am proud.
I don't get people who are proud of things that they have nothing to do with. It's actually pretty silly. Pride should be saved for what you do, what you accomplish in life. Citizenship, gender, race and the like are just luck, either bad or good depending on how you look at it, and taking pride in any of it usually says to me you don't have any real accomplishments to take pride in.
But am I grateful to be an American? Yep. I could have been from Somalia. Besides, who else but Americans get to watch much of the rest of the world look down their noses at us.....while trying to move here.

I, too, don't understand feelings of pride towards one's nationality; after all, noone can CHOOSE where they're born. People shouldn't be afforded a sense of pride over something they did nothing to achieve.

Re: Open Question: Are you proud to be an American?
I think people take far too much PERSONAL pride in their heritage. Acknowledging the positives and the negatives of one's heritage is fine as far as it goes, but hubris tends to take over. Taking the less savoury parts that happened to one's forebears - other people, long dead - to enable 'victimhood' is generally 'used' to claim priviledge that is unearned.
Similarly taking all the good parts of past people's lives and accomplishments and claiming them for oneself is also false and hubristic. Even taking accomplishments from any other person and claiming some sort of superiority for oneself by association (say, by gender) is false.
Being born English is good fortune for which most older Englishmen are grateful. I can understand Americans being grateful for being born under the US Flag too. A damned sight more grateful than the Somalians could hope to be!

Re: Open Question: Are you proud to be an American?
Being an American gives me a sense of superiority over the rest of the world, but on the other hand, I hate America because it is the nerve center of global Feminism and Liberalism. I think of all of the uppity women in the Middle East who would be keeping their mouths shut if they didn't have America to look to and it makes me sick.
I'm conflicted.

Proud..no...glad, yes.
"Civilization can only revive when there shall come into being in a number of individuals a new tone of mind, independent of the prevalent one among the crowds, and in opposition to it- a tone of mind which will gradually win influence over the collective one, and in the end determine its character. Only an ethical movement can rescue us from barbarism, and the ethical comes into existence only in individuals."
"Until he extends his circle of compassion to include all living things, man will not himself find peace."-Albert Schweitzer
