HER admirers believe she combines the poise of Jackie Kennedy with the brain of Hillary Clinton and the uncomplicated charm of Laura Bush. Many Democrats believe she will be a powerful asset to her husband's presidential campaign.

Michelle Obama, educated at Princeton and Harvard Law School, is described by friends as Senator Barack Obama's "true north". Her salary is twice his and she still spends most of her week looking after the couple's daughters Malia, 8, and Sasha, 5, at their Chicago home.

The Obama campaign is preparing to introduce the woman who could become America's first black first lady to the nation as soon as her husband formally announces his candidacy at a rally in Illinois this weekend. Some advisers view Mrs Obama as the campaign's secret weapon.

Whereas the tortuous and sometimes tawdry history of Mrs Clinton's marriage could hamper her attempt to return to the White House as president, Mr Obama's wholesome and stable marriage is likely to boost his already highly favourable image among voters.

With her high cheekbones and elegant, 1.8-metre frame, Mrs Obama, 43, is already one half of what Ebony magazine declared the hottest of America's "10 Hottest Couples". In this month's edition, they adorn the cover, along with the headline: "America's Next First Couple?"

She vets her husband's speeches and lets him bounce policy ideas off her. She occasionally chides him for neglecting his fatherly duties and insists that whenever he is home he reads Harry Potter to his children, makes the bed and takes out the rubbish. When he was elected a senator two years ago, Mr Obama, 45, publicly hailed the former Michelle LaVaughn Robinson as "the love of my life" and "the biggest star in the Obama family".

He has praised her for running the family home with "a general's efficiency" while he is the "dreamer". She brings in a $A378,000 salary as vice-president for external relations at the University of Chicago Hospitals. On weekdays, she rises at 4.30am to run on the treadmill before making breakfast.

Mrs Obama is adept at keeping her husband's feet on the ground and has been crucial to her husband's career. A native of Chicago's South Side, she introduced Mr Obama, born of a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya and brought up in Hawaii and Indonesia, to mainstream African-American life.

Her late father was a water pump operator and her mother, a former secretary, still lives in the humble one-bedroom flat the family moved to when Michelle was one. The couple met when she was a lawyer at the Chicago firm Sidley & Austin and she was assigned to look after the intern, then studying at Harvard Law School, from which she had already graduated. They were the only two black people at the firm and she at first thought it would be "tacky" and "predictable" for them to date.

Mr Obama currently spends four days a week in Washington, while his wife and daughters remain in Chicago. It was a difficult decision. His wife now jokes that "he's come to understand the wisdom of my plan".

He told Ebony that his wife demanded exacting standards.

"I still forget stuff. As Michelle likes to say: 'You are a good man, but you are still a man.' I leave my socks around. I'll hang my pants on the door. I leave newspapers laying around. But she lets me know when I'm not acting right. After 14 years, she's trained me reasonably well."

The couple have appeared on the Oprah show together and Mrs Obama has been delighted to meet Stevie Wonder, a childhood idol, and Spike Lee as what she calls her husband's "star power" has grown.

Think of it, this speaks volumes about:

1.) how society values men - i.e. it doesn't. He basically said he is an inferior being, an incompetent pathetic person compared to his wife. And it's no problem. It actually comes off kinda cute (at least it was meant to, and for many people out there, it obviously has). People will still vote for this man, because hey - there really is nothing to be ashamed of - after all how could we expect a mere man to be anything worthwhile compared to a woman? Therefore, he's appreciated for it and still a good candidate. And now imagine a male candidate bragging about calling his wife a "mere woman". It would be a 180 degrees turn, society would not tolerate it and to do that would be political suicide, or at least very damaging. But do the opposite - and you profit from it. Like I said, speaks volumes about the value of men and women, does it not?

2.) how men value themselves - i.e. lousy. This is the source of factor #1. There really seems to be complete lack of self-respect among men. If you don't respect yourself, than who will respect you? Can you imagine a female candidate bragging about being told that "she's a good woman but still a woman" by her husband and selling it unashamedly to get more votes?

And that, gentlemen, is why we are where we are. Feminism and misandry would be irrelevant, if it were not for (too) many men who are all too willing to accept the role of a lower life form - AND TAKE PRIDE IN IT. And when such men have a serious chance of becoming the leader of the most powerful country in the world - then what else, I ask, is to be expected but rampant misandry?

It's a shame he's such a capon. Has been looking to be the only decent person to vote for lately.

Imagine if a bachelor tried running for president. Oh, the stigma that would be attached to him. We got a taste of it with all the Mark Foley stuff... then again, he actually was a bit of a boytoucher. The media was quick to draw a correlation between that type of behavior and being unmarried though.

To be electable in our society, it's pretty much required that you become a self-loathing capon when it comes to actually being a man and standing up to the gynocracy.

All those bossy, bosomy schoolmarms and henpecking housewives of two generations ago have certainly broadened the field. They can now exert their petty authority in the both the private and public domain.

I guess that's 'having it all'. Pity it's not going to last. Even this icon of the American Dream has only two children and she's 43. It will be about 20 to 30 years before her two daughters feel the need of some mangina sperm. Will there be enough to go round? Will we still have functioning hospitals that can carry out the procedure?

Once again it will depend on what men do.

With a little more Africa in him, he might qualify as an "oreo cookie."

His middle name is Hussein .... not a real conversation starter that.

The media will celebrate vicious negative campaigning as Obama and Hitlery thrash and trash it out for the next several months, doing brutal damage to each other's reps and records. (Hillary has the most to lose... and also the better attack dogs at her disposal.)

Then, when Hillary is denying her lesbian affairs and Obama is renouncing his Muslim upbringing, watch for a centrist jello-mould demopublican to emerge and get the Dem's nomination....

Do the Americans here think that the Republican party has lost touch with its conservative roots? Some argue that between the Neo-conservatives and the Christian Right the party of Eisenhower, Goldwater and Nixon has disappeared (limited government, lower taxes, traditional morality etc)

My mum was a Yankee patriot, and fan of Ayn Rand (libertarian?) while my dad was a squishy liberal, so I'm still trying to sort it all out

Bachelor Tom... You're pretty much spot on as far as there being no more real conservatives in American politics. It's pretty much just Busheviks and Benny Hinn types in the Republican party. They all want the government up in everyone's shit, and I'm picking up a lot more of that Christian millenialist "God's chosen Nation" attitude from them.

Check out the documentary "Jesus Camp." The evangelical wackjobs actually speak in tongues while they "bless" a cardboard cutout of Bush Jr. Pat Robertson mentality is actually quite prevalent here, I'm sad to say.

The Republican party has always been one committed to statism and big government. They are a mirror image of the Dem's on actual policy issues even though they speak a bunch of quasi-libertarian rhetoric.

You should still vote Republican though because they appoint more conservative judges.
