Men and suicide what do you all think?

Is it just me I believe the economic problems, relationship problems and media fostered, tangible, widespread contempt for men in our western nations( I hear it is spreading elsewhere too) is helping to cause all these suicides of men.In my own life I have had 2 cousins who took their own lives,2 work colleagues,2 students in uni when I was there, who was a friend of a friend- who jumped off a block of flats.Because I have expressed interest in this subject people often tell me of others they have encountered, there are many. Some accidents that happen dont even make it to the statistics.
The figures are shocking look at Canada:

feminism is a disease the Doc is working on a cure. Symptoms include compulsive liar, constant aggression, allergic to logic, often affects women who are fat with short hair and big earings, but can be normal looking.
Reason tablets three taken daily. If the sufferer displays shaming tactics double the dose. Remarkably the illness disappears in disaster zones.

Re: Men and suicide what do you all think?

Statistically, they say women are more prone to depression. But I wonder if that is actually true, because how do they count that? Men who are depressed are more inclined to withdraw into themselves. Women have more "attempted" suicides. But the attempted suicides may be a cry for help, or an act of self-mutilation gotten out of hand not really a suicide attempt. Women who get depressed are more likely to seek help, even if in ways that earn them scorn. But men who get depressed are more likely to become hopeless and die rather than seek help. Social factors certainly have a lot to do with it.

Re: Men and suicide what do you all think?

Suicide statistics are problematic, of course. It all depends on how the person who kills him/herself stages the suicide. Did Robert Maxwell commit suicide? But even if we accept that the figures are crude, the trends seem to be pointing towards more suicides for men, particularly since the 1960's. Governmental policy must be an important factor.

I've voted Yes, I think the quite male-unfriendly societies and all the sexism against males is the primary cause for the high amounts of male suicides.

Re: Men and suicide what do you all think?

I know a guy who inherited a house his granfather built in 2000. His wife drove him out of this house, alienated his kids from him, attacked him in the street, tried to get the house via divorce which led to him not working because of depression, which led to a bedsit, the samaritans, and an overdose. Luckily he survived but I think the suicide attempt may have something to do with his treatment by society! So I voted Yes. It's not me btw. I have a different story!

Re: Men and suicide what do you all think?

If women were killing themselves in droves, the feminists would most surely blame this on The Patriarchy. Why the thundering silence on their part with regard to the issue of societal responsibility for male suicide?

Could it be because people would become aware of the War on Men? And started to do something about it? That would mean an end to the feeding frenzy for these manhaters. There might even be accountability. Can't have that, of course.

Still, I have faith that society will rediscover the value of men and manhood. I just hope it won't be too late.

I also have know personally of one successful and one unsuccesful attempt in males I have known. Another thing that I have thought about is the number of men who have died in RTA's. I know of three different cases of guys i have known. Men driving fast is traditionally put down to false bravado, the search for excitement etc. It would seem that these guys didn't value their own lives very much since two were known for fast driving. My point is that they were prepared to put themselves in harms way.....was this foolhardy or did they just lack self respect for some reason?

How many guys might kill themselves without leaving a suicide note or any evidence for others to know they killed themselves to spare family members any distress that they failed to help them. The stoical stiff upper lip to the end?

Indeed jbgood2 That is a blurry area but it still adds up to suicide and feeling worthless. When I was talking to someone about this very subject 12 years ago.I heard of a father and 2 sons who did this within 2 years of eachother.I SAY THIS AGAIN -THIS IS A HOLOCAUST!

The media occassionally bring it up and it may be mentioned in passing.
The BBC mentioned stuff on some local news I am reliably informed the man presenting the news said what drives people to suicide he never asked about men once.Yet were it a women's issue it would be "so what can be done to help these women"I could give many more examples.

I preach to the converted - I know .I have mentioned suicide in conversations to many intelligent men and women.Know what? They dont want to know.It does not make you the life and soul of the party.Noone gives a crap.Celtic Druid posted a shocking thing:The RSPCA gets more funding than mens cancers..
I wrote to politicians, clergy.Asked Doctors what could be done?

Credit to the Samaritans - what a great charity they are doing something all voluntary

I feel the suicide statistics for this country could do with some closer scrutiny in the same way that the stats used by the femnags have been proved to be bogus perhaps these too have innacuracies. I noticed that the samaritans failed to get lottery funding. I wonder what percentage of their clientel are male. Still a great organisation though. Suicide is painless if you are male apparently.

This is a spin, men are around four times more prone to clinical depression, bi-polar, dysphoria, schiztophrenia, and anxiety disorders.

I remember once having my heart broken, going out for a walk in the rain and crossing a busy road without looking, so little did I care in that moment for my own survival.

What we may be seeing is this effect on a grand scale, where male survival is valued so low as to be not worth fighting for.

I have experience with bipolar research (as just an individual) and all the documentation I've read states that bipolar patients are equal between the sexes, affecting 2.5% of the population. (if memory serves)

Re: Men and suicide what do you all think?

In the past two years we've had two kids at my high school commit suicide. Also, one of my close friends was close to committing suicide and even had to go to a pyschiatric ward (he's ok now). I live in the US in a relatively wealthy area, so there are higher suicide rates here (the wealthy seem more suicidal-prone).
