I miss him
...and every year, about this time, it's more painful. We spent every Christmas together when I was growing up. So many cherished memories! When I learned how to play the flute he came to all my concerts. This ("The Holly and the Ivy") was his favorite song from back then and it never seemed to matter to him that my playing probably hurt his ears. At Christmas time when I hear this song, it makes me happy and sad. I remember what was. I've never known a man quite like him. I don't play the flute anymore. I haven't for years. I can't wait until I see him again in the afterlife.

"Civilization can only revive when there shall come into being in a number of individuals a new tone of mind, independent of the prevalent one among the crowds, and in opposition to it- a tone of mind which will gradually win influence over the collective one, and in the end determine its character. Only an ethical movement can rescue us from barbarism, and the ethical comes into existence only in individuals."

Ho Ho Ho. Don't be sad little girl. Come and sit on my Father Christmas knee and tell me how naughty you have been.

The chance is pretty good for the second, but you have to trade a clunker for the first, it seems.

Re: I miss him Christmas can be hard without the ones that we love.
I read this poem a little while back, it's called 'Christmas in Heaven' and is written by Wanda Bencke. Apparently, her 13 year old handicapped daughter had a seizure on Christmas day and died 5 days later. She sent this poem out in a belated Christmas card to their friends and family after their daughter died.
I see the countless Christmas trees
Around the world below,
With tiny lights like heaven's stars
Reflecting in the snow.
The sight is so spectacular
please wipe away that tear
for I am spending CHRISTMAS
WITH JESUS CHRIST this year.
I hear the many Christmas songs
that people hold so dear
but the sound of music can't compare
with the CHRISTMAS CHOIR up here.
I have no words to tell you
of the JOY their voices bring
for it is beyond description
to HEAR THE ANGELS SING.
I know how much you miss me,
I see the pain inside your heartfor I am spending CHRISTMAS
WITH JESUS CHRIST this year.
I can't tell you of the SPLENDOR
or the PEACE here in this place
Can you just imagine CHRISTMASWITH OUR SAVIOR face to face
I'll ask him to lift your spirit
as I tell him of your love
so then PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHERas you lift your eyes above.
Please let your hearts be joyful
and let your spirit sing
for I am spending CHRISTMAS IN HEAVEN
and I’m walking WITH THE KING.

"Every noble impulse, every unselfish expression of love; every brave suffering for the right; every surrender of self to something higher than self; every loyalty to an ideal; every unselfish devotion to principle; every helpfulness to humanity; every act of self-control; every fine courage of the soul, undefeated by pretense or policy, but by being, doing, and living of good for the very good’s sake—that is spirituality." -David O. McKay

Re: I miss him
a really poignant expression of grief and loss by a mother for her daughter now gone forever; what a Xmas disaster for the family
got a lump in my throat reading it;
I can imagine how my family would feel at the loss of our dear Rebecca
some folk do suffer

Re: I miss him
One of my favourite (recent) Christmas tracks is 'Stop the cavalry' by Jona Lewie.
When I was young, both my Sister and I liked it so much - we both had our record (vinyl) and - for some strange reason - would compete to see who could play it more often.
It takes me back to a childhood, when I had a family, when my mother was alive, when we all lived under one roof, when we went on holidays together. It brings back a tearful smile.►My blog / Your Blog

Wife : "I dreamt they were auctioning off dicks. The big ones went for ten dollars and the thick ones went for twenty dollars."
Husband : "How about the ones like mine?"
Wife : "Those they gave away."
Husband : "I had a dream too...I dreamt they were auctioning off pussy. The pretty ones went for a thousand dollars, and the little tight ones went for two thousand."
Wife : "And how much for the ones like mine?"
Husband : "That's where they held the auction."

Re: I miss him
Kim, thanks.
You're right, of course. I know he's in a better place. I just miss him, that's all. The thing is, I feel his presence very few times during the year until Christmas season comes, and then it is constant, and it is very strong. I remember vividly all the sights, sounds, smells, laughter, hugs, smiles, warmth, everything!....like yesterday is today- like it is right now. I can see the Christmas tree and I can smell the pine, and I remember the silver and gold. He loved to decorate with silver and gold! I remember his favorite shirt.
It's funny the things we recall.
I know someday we'll be together again.

Re: I miss him
Hey, at least you met your grandfather...

Re: I miss him
I am grateful for that. ..and lucky, since he's the greatest man I've ever known. He dedicated his life, quite literally, to the well-being of children. He worked many years, put in many hours, raising funds for children's charities. His charity began at home. Not a mean bone in his entire body, this man. He certainly made sure I knew fully that he loved me.
On my dad's side of the family, my grandma died just a couple of years before I was born. It was during the holiday season. There was black ice on the highway and my grandpa hit a bad patch of it and the car slid into a concrete retaining wall. He lived, but grandma didn't.

Re: I miss him
my paternal gradfather was a character
he was from kansas city
he joined the air force at 16 in 1948 because he thought the dress uniform would help him get chicks.
he ended up spending 20 years in the air force, went back to nam as a civilian and owned nightclubs
he used to say stuff liike
"why in the hell would you go fishin, you spend all god damn day tryin to catch a fish, who's smarter, you or the fish?"
he was a hard core liberal who followed politics religously
