Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
Take a look at this:
http://www.curves.com/curves_right/
I crusade against the diet industry, because I see it was part and parcel of the advertising industry..trying to make money off people's low self-esteem.
And in so doing, I found this place: CURVES (see above link). They advertise as being "for women only". I have never heard of a gym that advertises as 'for men only'.
Could I make an issue out of this? Because if I can, I'd be helping kill two birds with one stone (the diet industry and the gender discrimination issue.)
Gimme some ideas as to what I/we could do!"I just owe almost everything to my father and it's passionately interesting for me that the things that I learned in a small town, in a very modest home, are just the things that I believe have won the election." ----former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
I lived in America (MI) for a couple of years, and saw a few of the Curves shops. I always vocally expressed my distaste for such a sexist organisation. Sickeningly, it's founder is a man.

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
This is really embarrassing, but I actually had a membership with Curves at one time. Someone gave me a "gift" of a free workout which actually turned into me being shut in a room with a saleslady who manipulated her way into my wallet. Shame on me for being so gullible! But at least I learned that lesson with a gym membership rather than a used car...
To the point here though... The diet industry isn't so nice, with marketing that exploits people's low self-esteem. But that is what happens in a capitalistic environment- business will create a need where the need didn't exist before, and they exploit people's weaknesses. The diet industry is but one of many types shady and manipulative marketing. Besides, exercise is good for you, and we Americans do eat a lot of garbage.
On the sexist issue, I think a woman's gym is fine. But you know that if someone opens up a man-only gym then the wyrmins will complain about the sexism. If I am not mistaken, I remember Curves or one of these women-only gyms losing a lawsuit so they will have to open their doors to men. Lemme see if I can find that...

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
Well I've only found reports that the men lost a lawsuit against Curves. (I thought the men had won somewhere, but dunno...) The Wisconsin court ruled that sex discrimination in gyms is okay. But, there are men-only gyms being opened now too, such as The Blitz for men. Story here. Another thing, some people might be interested to know that the CEO of curves has donated millions to pro-life causes.

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
Yeah, I knew the CEO of Curves donates to pro-life causes...I still think its unfair for them to have women only gyms. But since you said they do have men's only gyms, I feel a little better, as long as they are being fair to both.
BTW about the diet industry...I remember reading a study on a marketing website years ago....Weight Watchers (which is the spawn of Satan) deliberately tries to place their diet centers near Chinese restaurants. Reason being, the smell of Chinese food cooking appeals to most people, and after women come out of a WW meeting (after talking about nothing but FOOD for an hour), they get hungry, go "cheat" with Chinese food, then gain some weight back, and it insures what the diet industry calls "repeat customers". It keeps them coming to meetings.
My mother was forever on a diet when I was a kid, and she dragged me to meetings for lack of a babysitter sometimes...and you know, I do remember the WW places always being right near (or over) a Chinese restaurant!"I just owe almost everything to my father and it's passionately interesting for me that the things that I learned in a small town, in a very modest home, are just the things that I believe have won the election." ----former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
I hate Weight Watchers.

Their ads about the diet food for only $10 a day are very annoying too. Right, I want to spend twice as much for half the food. Yay.

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
See, this is one thing I LOVE about guys as opposed to (most) women. Women would take the frigging diet ads so seriously, and would be like, "Oh my GOD, she is a size 2!! I have to be a size 2, too!"
THIS, however, is how guys react to the retarded Nutrisystem ads geared to men:

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
This is the one that made me regard Nutrisystem as equal to Weight Watchers in terms of being the spawn of Satan. After you've been subjected to this commercial *every two minutes* on TV while working out, you get homicidal!

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
What is this size 2 you speak of? Even when I was a skinny teen weighing 110 lbs I wore a 5 or 6.

"My wife doesn't think I am as disgusting as I used to be..."
That's nice.
Have clothing sizes shrunk or is that woman like 4 feet tall to be wearing a 2?

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
You must be my age if you don't know what a size 2 is!
In my younger days, "skinny" was anything size 12 and under. Now, "plus size" is considered size 12 and up.
Apaprently, size 0 and 2 (for our UK friends, that's US sizing) are the "in thing" now...most anorexic models are size 0."I just owe almost everything to my father and it's passionately interesting for me that the things that I learned in a small town, in a very modest home, are just the things that I believe have won the election." ----former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher

You can see how much attention I give these ads- I got nutrasystem confused with ww. They all kind of blur like white noise to me.

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
I find skinny models to be revolting. I like a woman who has some meat on her, and won't snap in half during sex.

Re: Gyms, health clubs, etc "for women only"
Oh I have plenty of meat, enough to feed a small village anyway. It's not very lean though. Look at us talking about clothes like a couple of girls, Annette! Lol.
