Film: Teeth

Running Time: 93 mins

As the living embodiment of the vagina dentata myth, it was inevitable that Teeth's protagonist Dawn (Jess Weixler), a chipper high school chastity group leader, wouldn't remain abstinent for very long. As she embarks on a blossoming romance with new boy Tobey (Hale Appleman), her initial resistance becomes a source of frustration to him. It is in a secluded cave - where Tobey decides to force himself on Dawn - that the film's titular teeth take their first horrific bite.

From then we follow the sexually-awakened lead character as she encounters a series of unpleasant men who try to take advantage of her apparent naivety. Dawn's creepy gynecologist (Josh Pais), nerdy classmate Ryan (Ashley Simpson) and even stepbrother Brad - a memorable, scenery-chewing performance from John Hensley - are all destined for a comeuppance.

Squirm inducing and hilarious in equal measure, Teeth may carry a bizarre premise but, like all good B-movies should, it successfully pushes the boundaries of acceptable taste. Working on multiple levels, Teeth ticks boxes as a '50s, Roger Corman-style exploitation throwback, an unnerving psychological horror and a satire on middle-American values.

The film has been floating around in UK release limbo for some time (perhaps in part due to uncertainty on how to best market it) after initially making waves at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007. Its trailers pitch it as a teen horror film, however it operates more potently as a dark comedy. Granted its humour is about as jet-black as you can get, but it fits more aptly into that genre than any other.

At times it's as traumatic a watch for male viewers as 2005's Hard Candy, yet sets itself apart from David Slade's film by being less direct, that little bit more playful. Knowing full well that his story strains plausibility, writer/director Mitchell Lichtenstein's script is self-aware, offering knowing winks to the audiences and diffusing gruesome lacerations with humour ("I'm not going to bit ya!" remarks the doomed gynecologist Dr. Godfrey).

Leading lady Jess Weixler gives a standout turn as Dawn, capably taking the character from do-gooder to deadly Lolita. It's the kind of performance she may have trouble shaking off but one that has no doubt opened a lot of doors for her.

Teeth is an impressive first feature from actor-turned-filmmaker Lichtenstein. As the son of legendary pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, it's a little disappointing that he utilises such a drab colour palette. Though his opening Hitchcock-evoking scene - an establishing pan across the suburban setting for the story, accompanied by dramatic Bernard Hermann-like strings - shows that he's inherited his father's knack for image composition.

A lack of visual dynamism is a minor quibble considering how enjoyable the rest of the film is - yet Teeth shot with the urgency and vigour that Sam Raimi injected into his Evil Dead series could have made it even better. Nevertheless, the film is smartly written, inventive and wickedly funny.

Wrapping men's intimacy anxieties around a girl empowerment parable, Teeth is full of surprises, cunningly flipping genre stereotypes and defying expectations. While probably too lurid and graphic for the mainstream's tastes, it's one of those films that has a genuine shot at acquiring cult classic status.

Re: Film: Teeth

When i was a young lunatic I regularly encountered women who had teeth in their vaginas, walked on phallic legs and had huge eyes for breasts and metal limbs that leaked acid..

Then I had medication, and the walls of the wards where covered in flames, tigers roamed the corridors and women where all cats..

I was rescued by a woman who told me that I was possessed by satan and his evils and oddly, those things seemed to pretty much immediately go away..

I had stopped taking the meds months previously as they had not worked!

The cure was, sleeping in peace, faith in gods forgiveness of my sins and staying away from dirty women!!

I thought I had posted in this thread yesterday, I must be going looney. Anyways I can see this being another Hard Candy. Wear plastic chompers in your woman bits that will teach 'em.

Re: Film: Teeth

This will undoubtedly appeal to the sick, twisted and misandric mentality of many female cinema goers.

It stretches credibility that almost every male this woman comes across sets out to rape her. Take advantage maybe, but that's quite different from rape. Certainly not deservest of such an act of hateful bloody barbarism.

Comeuppance? This is a vindictive strewn mentality hardwired into 'many' womens brains. And always, but always it's out of context and disproportionate to whatever affront or crime they have "supposedly" endured. We see this manifested most clearly amongst female judges and politicians. Morally corrupt, and consumed with misandry!

Quote:

Parable? Where's the moral lesson? All I see is a lesson in immorality. Yet another example of the morally redundant. Cutting off mens penises is "girl empowerment"? And furthermore moral? Try misandric! Using the same 'illogic' Jack the Ripper sexually mutilating his victims was him just enacting "man empowerment"? Interesting how Jack the ripper was rightfully condemned for such atrocious acts on women in the late 19th century. Yet today in the 21st century we have a "fashionable" cult of male sexual mutilation embraced by many women with 'Jackie the Rippers' springing up all over the place!

Can you blame men for having intimacy anxieties?

People will say it's just comedy, dark comedy maybe, but just comedy nevertheless. Ok then, I wonder how a film about a man with a penis festooned with serrated teeth bloodily fucking his way through swarms of women seeking to take advantage of his naivety (yes, many young men are gullible), would be received. Would these same people find it equally comedic?

Some may take this film with a pinch of salt. However, if you think that films such as this one along with a neverending list of similar misandric fare that we are subject to - doesn't have a cumulative effect on how men are generally treated by women, and ubiquitous depictions of such women as being somehow justified in enacting "excessive" retribution for any perceived slight. You'd be delusional. Women, especially young women, take their social cues from the media, like it or not. Many are the product of a cliched confused amalgamation of parental and media influence. Guess which influence "rebelliously" usurps the other?

There is undeniable causality between misandry in the media and womens violent behaviour towards men.

It seems like I saw a post about this movie months ago. It's just downright creepy that they try to present it as high art.

Anything that would be otherwise unacceptable if the genders were reversed is perversely presented as art, routinely. Germaine Greer's pedophile book about little boys, complete with naked photos are one example of this selective concept of "art."

Re: Film: Teeth

Same feminist inspired misandry as the "Rapex" device.

I seldom go to the cinema now , its never a worthwhile or thought provoking experience more often its demoralising and depressing.
Vote with your feet and to everyone you know disparage this film.
They are a predominantly accursed brood film makers nowadays their own malice will recoil on themselves for putting out so much violence and hatred and stirring up dissension.

But do not get upset by this comrades go forth and make your own productions. Expose their evil.

feminism is a disease the Doc is working on a cure. Symptoms include compulsive liar, constant aggression, allergic to logic, often affects women who are fat with short hair and big earings, but can be normal looking.
Reason tablets three taken daily. If the sufferer displays shaming tactics double the dose. Remarkably the illness disappears in disaster zones.

Re: Film: Teeth

I confirmed my suspicions of the filmaker being a feminist after a little googling.

In the below clip (5min 22) he is asked by the interviewer "you got the inspiration for this from Camille Paglia?" He admits this, and mentions "she was one of my most influential teachers back in college." Where he learned about this myth about a toothed vagina that existed historically in various cultures (or was this just native ignorance explaining away women sexually mutilating men?).

Apparently Paglia had input on the film. I wonder just how moderate she really is?

When asked about Eve Ensler (vagina monologues) he proceeds to mention "I would love to have her as an honourable guest."

When asked about a sequel he said "her work is far from over." Yep, hate always has a sequel.

I mentioned the main points here in case some people can't access the video.
