Feministing.com: Men should pay girlfriends half the cost of birth control pills
Feministing.com is demanding that men pay their girlfriends half the cost of birth control:
http://www.feministing.com/archives/011440.html
Jessica Valenti wrote a column in reply to a recent Dear Abby column, in which a woman wrote in claiming that her live-in boyfriend ought to share the cost of her $40/month birth control pills, since they already share living expenses. Abby replied that expenses for personal items shouldn't be shared, comparing birth control to Viagra, and suggested that the woman should pay for her own birth control.
Valenti took issue with Abby, saying that it's only fair to expect a man to pay. One feminist commenter actually wrote this in response to Abby's column:
Let's see... At $40/month, that comes out to $1.33 per day. Half that amount is 67 cents, the daily amount that the man is expected to pay to contribute to "his share" of the birth control costs.Dude doesn't chip in, dude doesn't get pussy. End of story.
I think that any woman who expects her man to pay as a condition for sex is putting a price on her sexuality. The cheapest prostitutes might charge $10 for a mere hand job, but apparently her price is only 67 cents for full service. Gotta love fairness.

I don't see any women willing to pay for my vasectomy.

What if your girlfriend happens to be taking the pill for a reason other than to prevent pregnancy... and it being pretty much the only reason?

The thing is, like with everything, men should be supporting them financially even though they're supposed to be "independent," "empowered," and all that crap we're spoon-fed. Yet they don't expect to actually look after themselves. They can go fuck themselves, 'cause they're on my dick.

If her price was $.67, I would hand her 3 quarters and ask if she could make change.

It's a woman's choice to take the pill! You want it, you pay for it!
I hadn't seen feministing.com before. It's a craaaazy place over there

Re: Feministing.com: Men should pay girlfriends half the cost of birth control pills
I personally think both partners should share the cost of birth control. He should share the cost of birth control and she should pay half the cost of condoms...
Perhaps not, but we paid for my husband's vasectomy reversal, and borrowed money from my side of the family to do so.I don't see any women willing to pay for my vasectomy.

Re: Feministing.com: Men should pay girlfriends half the cost of birth control pills
Why would anyone pay anything for a hand job when they've got two hands of their own?
Back to topic: I don't see contributing to birth control costs as putting a price on one's sexuality, but I do see it as an investment toward no further investments...
If I were a man (hold your laughter, please)...I wouldn't rely on women to hold so much power in regard to my reproductive and financial future. I'd not rely on honesty. I'd rely on myself for all matters pertaining to birth control, and if she had a problem with this, it would be, "see ya."

Re: Feministing.com: Men should pay girlfriends half the cost of birth control pills
It wasn't the contributing to birth control costs that was putting a price on sexuality. It was the "no pill, no pussy" remark. Basically paying for sex. Prostitution. And as a man, I don't see why I would have for a woman's birth control pills. Once again... I don't see anybody paying for my condoms.

Re: Feministing.com: Men should pay girlfriends half the cost of birth control pills
The "no pill, no pussy" remark is, in a sense, extortion or black mail, because she's extorting money from a man in order to take control of her own reproductive future.
(Is "extorting" the right word? Or is "black mail" the right word?) I don't know. But I think that both men and women should take responsibility for their own. It wouldn't hurt for a woman (who believes whole-heartedly in the pill) to provide her own pills, and for men who don't trust the pill, or who don't trust women to remember to take the pill, to use condoms, and provide his own.
If the couple in question is really intent on not having a baby, it doesn't hurt to use more than one birth control method. Nature finds a way...more protection is better. Abstinence is best, though not entirely realistic, since men and women have sex drives.

I do not agree that denying your partner sex because he refuses to share the cost of the pill is prostitution. Get real. It's lame and should tell you a lot about the woman's character but it is not anything you could relate to hooking.
I personally would not be in a relationship with a man who was such a tightwad. Been there, done that. I prefer to have a generous exchange going both ways...

Easy to say now, but in reality - it often isn't so simple.
She could easily make problems claiming you can't commit, can't trust, this that the other, basically what already happens "blame a man"
Men *want* to be able to trust women, and if we didn't - feminists would use it as 'proof' that we 'hate' women

Wife : "I dreamt they were auctioning off dicks. The big ones went for ten dollars and the thick ones went for twenty dollars."
Husband : "How about the ones like mine?"
Wife : "Those they gave away."
Husband : "I had a dream too...I dreamt they were auctioning off pussy. The pretty ones went for a thousand dollars, and the little tight ones went for two thousand."
Wife : "And how much for the ones like mine?"
Husband : "That's where they held the auction."

Re: Feministing.com: Men should pay girlfriends half the cost of birth control pills
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ahem, sorry about that I just couldn't help myself. What a bloody ridiculous notion. Why should he pay for her drugs? Yeah yeah he is getting the benefit out of them blah blah blah. Does that mean that if he ever needs Viagra she will pay for it?
Drugs no matter what they are for should be personal. It just makes sense. I don't ask my girlfriend to buy me my pain killers so why should the pill be any different?
What if the pill costs more than the condoms? What if the condoms cost more? It just gets messy. Let the guys buy the condoms and let the girls buy their own pill. Just makes things cleaner that way. If she was perhaps more mature I'd say your solution was a fair compromise but from reading her email she sounds like a very immature girl to me.I personally think both partners should share the cost of birth control. He should share the cost of birth control and she should pay half the cost of condoms...
