I've an idea that page has been mentioned here previously, but either way, it's still a great find!

The first time I ever read of "witches" being executed in large numbers was from a children's book Ripley's Believe It Or Not: Magic and Magicians published in 1984. This book told of the misogynistic book The Witches Hammer published during the middle ages, whichinfluenced a great deal of the witch hunts and executions. According to your own source women were in fact the majority of those executed for heresy and witchcraft, just not in the numbers some will claim:

Not the majority for heresy. Only witchcraft. The fact that men were also burned as witches shows that it wasn't a gendercide.

The numbers of 100.000 - 200.000 are still shockingly large. I'm not sure if that includes heresy.

By the way, most of these executions happened in the North of Europe and were performed by secular powers. The official Inquisition (there were several) did not actually execute many people (a few hundred). Of course, if the church had allowed heresy, even more people would have been killed in the subsequent religious conflicts (which did eventually happen in the 30 year Catholic-Protestant war, which layed a third of Europe in ashes).

I read that in Scandinavia it were mainly the men who were burned as witches. Why doesn't that surprise me?

Both women and men were accused of 'witchcraft,' and men make up the majority of those accused of 'heresy.' Both groups were brutally tortured by the Inquisition. Furthermore, most of the accusers of supposed witches were women. Feminist claims that witch-groups actually existed, and were "healers", are not supported by scholarship, nor is the claim that accused witches were actually the remnants of a gentle, female-centered pagan religion.

The Salem witch-hunt also revolved around a female accuser.

Who also happened to be a child! And we all know children never lie, don't we?!

I remember reading a book about it. IIRC, there were about ten or so girls. One of them actually came out and confessed, only to be harassed by the other girls to shut up and say she was lying.
