Day of 'Global Revolution' comes to London as thousands of demonstrators take over the City

I'm sure a number of informed members here have been following the 'Occupy Wall Street' demonstrations over some weeks, which have covered more than 200 U.S. cities.

Today, London and various British and worldwide cities followed suit.

Personally, I believe there's great justification for the '99%' to stand up and say we're no longer going to be trodden upon and exploited relentlessly by a greedy, soulless and psychopathic elite. I've noticed personal politics and ideologies being left at the perimeter of these camps, and folk are massing to protest as a collective of humans, united against a common enemy.

Some of the American police have been unecessarily brutal in attempting to suppress these righteous demonstrations, but as one poignant placard directed at police stated "Your only one failed paycheck from joining us."

As in America, don't expect the bought and paid for British press to report extensively on this. I doubt if there'll be much mention in tonight's news.

    What are your thoughts?

Day of 'Global Revolution' comes to London as thousands of demonstrators take over the City

    • Occupy London follows occupation movements from across the world
    • Police ask Julian Assange 'to remove mask' he was wearing
    • Protesters had wanted to 'take' Paternoster Square - but it has been closed
    • Tents now being put up in the Square Mile
    • Protests contained within City area and currently not spreading
    • Two arrests made for 'assaults on police officers'

Protesters inspired by the growing 'Occupy Wall Street' movement in the U.S have today taken over the City of London.

Thousands have descended on the area known as the Square Mile - under the banner 'Occupy the Stock Exchange' - for a 'peaceful protest' against the global financial system.

They had planned to take Paternoster Square, where the Stock Exchange is located, but police cordoned off the area prior to the protest.

A notice was put up stating the square is private property and access would be restricted. Police sources said a High Court injunction had been taken out to prevent members of the public from accessing the square.

The event kicked off at midday outside St Paul's Cathedral and initial reports on Twitter talked of an 'amiable' atmosphere.

Activists carried banners with slogans such as 'We are the 99%' and 'Bankers got a bailout, we got sold out'.

Among them was Lorena Fuentes, 27, a charity worker originally from Vancouver, Canada. She said: 'I'm here today because I can't see why you wouldn't be and I feel that this is one of the few moments in history where it's not a protest, it's an actual movement that's taken root.

'We're trying to challenge this myth that there are not enough resources to go around.'

The protest was contained within the vicinity of St Paul's Cathedral, and some demonstrators started to put up tents - hopeful that they will be able to remain in the area for the future.

At around 2pm, police reportedly 'kettled' protesters outside St Paul's Cathedral, where the demonstrators were forced to move because of the closure of Paternoster Square.

Scotland Yard said two arrests were made for assaults on police officers.

After protesters returned to St Paul's Churchyard, the square in front of the cathedral, police prevented more people trying to join the protest by cutting off access points.

Several hundred protesters congregated behind the police lines and heckled officers for not allowing anyone through.

Police at the scene denied that a "kettling" technique had been put in place to close protesters in and said they were free to leave the square.

A bride, who was scheduled to get married in the Cathedral this afternoon, was ushered in by staff through a side entrance as the crowd swelled.

An assembly of speakers then took place.

Wikileaks' Julian Assange, who turned up at the protest wearing a mask, was asked to take it off by police. Human rights lawyer Jen Robinson, who came to his aid, tweeted: '#assange not under arrest. Says we can't wear masks and be anonymous but swiss banks accounts can be #occupylsx.'

The Guardian reported that he broke through the police kettle enclosing St Paul's Cathedral at 2.30pm. He then fought his way through protesters, turned half-way up the steps and addressed those gathered below.

The newspaper's Mark Townsend said: 'Assange began by lamenting the police tactics, noting hundreds more remained stranded outside the kettle.

'Then he began attacking a greedy and corrupt system that had united individuals from Cairo to London. People are being ordered to Guantanamo Bay to obey the rule of law, and money is being laundered through the Caymen Islands and London to obey the rule of law.

'This movement is not about the destruction of law, but the construction of law. With that he stopped, the crowd hollering as a list of other occupations throughout the world was read out.'

The Occupy London Stock Exchange collective, which is supported by UK Uncut, said a Facebook page on the protest had attracted more than 13,000 followers, with more than 5,000 confirmed attendees.

Laura Taylor, a supporter of the so-called OccupyLSX, said: 'Why are we paying for a crisis the banks caused? More than a million people have lost their jobs and tens of thousands of homes have been repossessed, while small businesses are struggling to survive.

'Yet bankers continue to make billions in profit and pay themselves enormous bonuses, even after we bailed them out with £850 billion.'

Another supporter, Kai Wargalla, said: 'This is a people-powered movement protesting against the increasing social and economic injustice in the UK.

'We want to stand with the 99% - the overwhelming majority who value people over profit.

'We want to make our voices heard against greed, corruption and for a democratic, just society. We stand in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street, protesters in Spain, Greece and the Middle East who started this movement.

'They have inspired people all over the world to step forward and make their voices heard.'

UK Uncut supporter Peter Hodgson added: 'The success of the square occupations across Spain in calling for democracy and an end to austerity, alongside the rapid growth of the Wall Street occupation, has shown that this is what is needed in London and the UK.

'The Government is ignoring its electorate as they impose these austerity measures.'

OccupyLSX previously issued a statement which said: 'The words corporate greed ring through the speeches and banners of protests across the globe.

'After huge bailouts and in the face of unemployment, privatisation and austerity, we still see profits for the rich on the increase. But we are the 99%, and on October 15 our voice unites across gender and race, across borders and continents, as we call for equality and justice for all.

'In London, we will occupy the Stock Exchange. Reclaiming space in the face of the financial system and using it to voice ideas for how we can work towards a better future.

'A future free from austerity, growing inequality, unemployment, tax injustice and a political elite who ignores its citizens, and work towards concrete demands to be met.'

Occupy LSX was behind a protest that saw Westminster Bridge closed on Monday.

According to its website occupations are also being planned in other areas of the country, including Worcester, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Bristol.

Of course its a good idea, but it will be interesting to see how many join this revamped version of the anti-globalist protest.

Bearing in mind it is a "global protest", right now Greece is in the front line and surely all energy should be used there. The outcome in Greece will set the tone for the rest of Europe

I watched a rapper, 'Immortal Technique,' on RT news, who spoke eloquently about the situation.

Think about how many people can be informed by his lyrics and other like-minded musicians.

Oh, I am impressed. And I like what was written in this article. NZ has some strong people into this and I think it's awesome it's happening now as men have made their own movement too.

But the uniqueness of this global protest is that there isn't a presiding politics which seeks to control or hijack it. And to attack the elites provides opportunity to cut and damage the umbilical cord which gives much sustenance to feminism.

Hmmm, very true. But this is not new and the men who cared about this before ....were backers of feminists. Can you explain how you see the opportunity? (if you don't mind)

As Percy says, it's men's business.

But seriously Julie, as you have a foot in both camps so to speak, it would be unwise of me to disclose what little tactical innovations the MRA camp can muster. It's pointless if our army is beaten before it reaches the enemies gates.

    Oh, good for you.

New Zealand has already copped things big time through the UN and from the Maori and the main group leaders of the revolution you wrote of have been challenged through facebook on men's rights by a few of us. I guess all I can do is look on and say well done when you do what needs to be done. I see so much of your excellent work already.

I cannot take seriously a 'protest' that is populated by people with rastafarian hairdos or baseball caps on backwards. Hippies brought us much of the self-indulgent mess we have and seem intent on simply making a different mess on a global scale. I doubt you would find the same people protesting against feminism or the family court or false allegations, yet these are real issues of far greater moment to all men.

Stand back a little further CD and see even more.

Amusing how the great unwashed, protesting at corporate"greed", rely so heavily on Facebook, Twitter, Apple and a bunch ofother "corporates" to co-ordinate their activities. The protesters are comprised of all the usual suspects of course, Marxists, communists, socialists, extreme environmentalists (naturally), the hard Left, all using the demonstrations to advocate for "social change"

I am as against 'Big Government', greed, corruption, lies, mendacity and feminism, as I am against Marxists, Socialists, dole-bludgers and other assorted parasites.

So, who are these Occupy Wall Street people who would seek our sympathy?

And do we see any of them protesting outside a Family Court or a taxpayer funded 'Womyn's Shelter that has its windows plastered with signs telling how men abuse women every 2 seconds.?

On August 10, 2011, the hacker group “Anonymous” announced that it would join the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations. That’s what sparked my interest in monitoring #OccupyWallStreet.

I reached out to acolleague and asked if he would be interested in studying the protest with me. At first, it seemed disorganized, and we believed it would only be a few hundred protestors.

As we engaged in monitoring its growth, we recruited other people to help us begin the collection of data available via social media. We began mapping out key players, and monitored Anonymous’s efforts to organize protests in the San Francisco Bay area public transportation system (#opBART) in order to detect patterns and key influencers.

Then, at the end of August, we were alerted by a fellow researcher that information about USDoR (U.S. Day of Rage, to which Occupy Wall Street is connected) had been posted on Shamuk and Al-Jahad, two Al-Qaeda recruitment sites. We began to take the “Occupy” protest more seriously, and dedicated more time to research and monitoring.

Percy, its no big deal if you are a traditional english (liberal) conservative.

In the present political reality, as you noitice the old left-right division are breaking down and we in an era of "issue" politics - this is a product of the post cold war world. Me? I am very left wing on some issues, right wing on other issues. When I am in the UK and I read the "conservative" Daily Telegraphy, but I often find that paper quite left wing!

We form broad alliances on issue(s) - and we might all march seperately, but we must make sure we "strike together"

While we dont see the anti-globalists protesting outside family courts, this is often becuase they are YOUNG and yet to experience the joys of family courts. With a bit of luck, the anti Wall Street protestors are beginning to learn the true nature of state power and in future years use their radicalism against other issues - such as family courts, or ID cards (as was the case in the UK recently).

The F4J generation were very much my generation and the F4J leader (O connor) was on the same marches as me in the early 1980s - and we can see what a wonderful leader he turned out to be in fathers movment. What do you think he would have said if you asked him about family issues in 1980? I doubt he would be interested - pretty much the same as you, Percy, are not interested in say civil rights in Ukraine.

The key issue is now "who rules" the banks or citizens. I dont care if you are a marxist or a conservative, I will march with you in a common cause in protection of my rights, and here Celtic Druid has made a fine post and is trying to encourage a broad chruch of support on a key issue of our time. And let us not forget how Hitler came to power - beause all the anti nazi forces could not unite against him. History has taught us a lesson we should not forget - unless you want the bankers to be our new dictators.

As alwasy Percy on mens rights issues you are a great and informed authority, but don't let your politics blind you to the wider fight and who the ultimate enemies are.

I'm seeing the protests in a different light. Currently, the liberal and uber-left have been losing political clout due to Obama's rather beige effectiveness as a president. The left feels let down because he turned out to be more of a centrist politician than a leftist. The 2012 elections will be coming very soon and the left and uber-left need to energize their base. The protests here in the U.S. have been organized by professional protesters, and yes they train the protesters in non-violence, but that will not stop the anarchists and young people looking for violent confrontation.

I stopped by the protest in my city and saw what Percy describes, a lot of Patchouli drenched hipsters with nuts and bolts in their faces, 20 somethings acting like psuedo-hippies, but drinking $4 Starbucks Lattes and tweeting with their iPads.

I'm all for having the wealthy pay their share of taxes and reining in the power of the big banks. I am not for the protesters support of socialism/communism.

Richard, like you I am both conservative and somewhat liberal on the issues. To me, socialism equates an entitlement state, and that I vehemently oppose.

Globalism was an interesting economic experiment, now we are stuck with the results. Results that have become policy and law in many countries. Unfortunately going back will simply destroy the worlds economy and put the world into an economic depression

The wealthy 1% the protesters scream about will always be the wealthy 1%. They covet power above all else, they desire to shape human destiny to their ideals. They need to have a compliant workforce to produce the capital that keeps them in power, so they influence policy and political movements.

In the early days of feminism, they saw a threat to their established order, so feminism was co-opted and molded to their agenda. Now with the majority of women working, they neutralized the threat and created legions of avid (rabid) supporters.

Policy and laws were changed to promote the new agenda, and now we have to deal with an economy that usually needs 2 parents working full time to have a house, 2 cars, and 2 kids. Remove the father from the picture and the state takes over. The state now has an avid supporter, the Mother of course. It's a perfect vicious cycle that supports the feminists, the state, policies and laws, and in the end the wealthy 1%.
