    Classic Brainwashing

You all may remember my post regarding my dear friend who's caused me great concern by choosing to take Women's Studies. She called me tonight to read an essay she had to write for her class (she likes to bounce various assignments for all her classes off of me to get a second opinion before she hands them in). The topic of the essay was "The portrayal of women in the media". I was treated to several pages on the negative effect of the media's portrayal of WOMEN (yes, you heard me right). The essay went into detail about how women are being objectified, demeaned and made to feel that they aren't good enough. I also got to hear how the media teaches women and men to view women as objects, thus leading to drastic increases in rape statistics. I was just stunned listening to all of it. At the end she asked what I thought and I just sat there in silence. She thought I was unimpressed with her writing skills and started asking me if it was really, really bad. I told her that her writing was excellant, I just didn't agree with a single, solitary thing she'd said. She went on to tell me that these weren't her thoughts, they had to watch a video on the subject and the assignment was to write an essay conveying the message of the video like you were trying to teach that same message to somebody else. Correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't this classic brainwashing? They didn't tell them to watch the video and give their own opinion on it, or even to write an essay outlining their feelings on the portrayal of women in the media, but to teach the message, exactly as it was given by the video. Although she did do the assignment as requested, I was proud that she showed a bit of rebellion by adding in a bit about the negative effect the media also has with it's portrayal of boys and men
"Every noble impulse, every unselfish expression of love; every brave suffering for the right; every surrender of self to something higher than self; every loyalty to an ideal; every unselfish devotion to principle; every helpfulness to humanity; every act of self-control; every fine courage of the soul, undefeated by pretense or policy, but by being, doing, and living of good for the very good’s sake—that is spirituality." -David O. McKay

you're strong kim..................................ya know one time I ran across a website of women bitching about "video vixens" which are women who dance in rap videos and women on the site were all up in arms, and I thought to myself "how does this compare to the objectification of guys like floyd mayweather, zab judah, viatali klitscko, bahby joe mesi etc who beat each others brains out for the entertainment of people"

I had to go and google some of those people to figure out who you were talking about. You also don't hear cries of foul over men in media sporting a six pack and parading around shirtless. Women are just fine with that kind of objectification. We all know sex sells, and women are buying into it just as much as men these days. The only difference is the women buy into it and then cry that they're being objectified. What I find insulting is the ridiculous women on reality shows who are apparently just being themselves...now THAT'S embarassing.

You do not say how old your friend is Kim, but she lacks moral courage and intellectual honesty. You rightly point to the brainwashing but I go further.

She has a duty to her own integrity to object in the strongest terms. If one cannot complete college or Uni with a modicum of intellectual honesty at the very least, it was a waste attending.

There was a chap in Victoria (Oz) some years back who paid $12000 in fees to a Uni here to do a Masters. At the end he sued and won, on the basis that it was all out of date crap.

I recall, too, when I did my first degree, a lecturer had the timerity and arrogance to give me a 'D' on a paper. He wrote half a page of criticism in red ink. I wrote 2 pages of refutation in green ink and sent it back with a demand for at least a 'B' or to see me at dawn on the common. He capitulated and gave me a 'B+'.

By the way, I applaude your integrity, intellectual honesty and moral courage for raising the issues with her.

Kim, you will find the linked article of interest. This is how brainwashed our young folk are.

Such censorship is apparently acceptable even if no one has been offended - worthy student officials can simply feel offended on behalf of invisible others who are supposedly too weak to speak up for themselves.
University was once a place where young people became adults, free to think for themselves, to negotiate relationships with others, to offend and be offended, and to argue their case both in lectures and in the student bar. Now, the current demonisation of offence on campus treats students and young adults as vulnerable idiots who must be protected from jokey party posters or the words of big bully boys by all means available. This infantilises students, rather than allowing them to learn, grow up, experiment, test out their arguments and discover how to stand up for themselves and their beliefs.

She's the same age I am, early 30's, and I agree with you. I can't think of a situation where this would have happened but if I, by some odd twist of cosmic fate, had ended up in a Women's Studies class, I would have delighted in handing in an essay systematically refuting, point by point, everything they had said in the video. My friend is wonderful, good and kind, but she'd be the first to admit that she's not very strong and by no means a fighter.

Thanks for the link. It's so true...in today's educational system, free thinking is the enemy. We purposely taught our children to think for themselves, to form opinions and values and then to stick by them. You would think this would be a good thing, something to be valued. It's actually led to quite a few problems for my oldest son. Any time he voices thoughts that contradict in any manner with what's being taught, even though he does it in a respectful manner, he gets in trouble for being a disruption.

On feministing.com there was this femcunt who teaches a womyn's studies class, and she said she uses Jessica Valenti's book in all of her classes. I almost fell off my chair in disbelief, then I realized that I shouldn't be surprised, these are femcunts we are talking about.

"The Women's Room" by Marilyn French, which contains the expressed view that "All Men are Rapists" is a set text in every Australian University.

    It is an OUTRAGE.

    OUTRAGEOUS.
