Because she can't always retain full control - she will threaten her daughter with "I'll tell Uncle Karl what you've done/you're doing..." If she then stops her behaviours, I pretend not to have heard... but if she continues, I'll hear; "Karl... Guess what...?" and that is my cue to boom a raised voice (not shouting) toward my neice.
Sounds as though you are being used as a weapon, Karl.

I knew a chap (in a men's group I ran in Melbourne over 15 years ago) who never managed to become close to his dad. He was a little chap during the war and dad was away in PNG on the Kakoda Track. Up to then he had not known his dad (he was born after Dad went to war) and dad was cast as a killer of Japs and saving Australia. To an older child would perhaps have been an heroic image. The emphasis to him as a little boy though was that dad was a killer. He often heard his mother say "Just you wait til your dad gets back....".

He was scared shitless at the prospect. And he never overcame that early brainwashing.

It is so easy for mothers to 'use' a man, usually the father, in this way. Personally I would put my foot down and stop her doing that, but each to his own I guess.

I agree. I know first-hand what Percy's talking about. My mother would use my father as a weapon to make up for her shortcomings when it came to dispensing discipline. Mother couldn't handle us the way dad could, so she would always come crying to him to handle us. She would get our dad to spank us, but after doing so, she would come to console us, as if she were the "good guy" to dad's "bad guy," when it was her that wanted him to do the spanking in the first place. A way of psychologically turning us against our father, so that mother can do no wrong.

Yes....how many times during childhood when we know we've done something wrong, have we heard our mothers use these words:

"Just you wait until your dad gets home!"

    Or how about this one:

"Just wait until your father hears about this!"

LOL...this brings back funny memories. I remember hearing those words...one time I was about four or five, and I heard those words- and I had about three hours before my dad got home to come up with a plan of action. So I thought and thought and thought...and came up with the idea of putting one of my Dr. Suess hardcover books down the back of my pants. (I knew I was getting a spanking when he got home, and I figured the book would make it less painful).. I guess I figured he wouldn't notice...lol...ah but my plan was uncovered and I got twice the spanking for trying to pull one over on him.

    That's women for ya.

I had my share of those as well. I remember one time I got suspended for 5 days from school and since both my parents were working I had to walk home.

My mom made a special call home to tell me that my dad would be giving me the belt when he got home.

I had the belt a few times before and it really hurt. My dad though refused to pull my pants down and believe me, it wasn't necessary.

On this occasion though I could hear them arguing from my room where I waited. She demanded that I get it bare. I won't forget that, it was like she wanted me to be in as much pain as possible.

    Hard cover books?

I tried padding my underwear with toilet paper ONCE, but hard cover books?? What were you thinking?

I wouldn't doubt that there's a level of sadism involved. I could think of no reasoning behind it. I've gotten the belt, too and no... bare wasn't necessary.

Ha...I was *thinking* I might not feel it...what I didn't think about was the fact that he was sure to discover the deception as soon as he took my pants down...told ya...I wasn't the brightest kid on the block!

The best defense is to train your mind to take the pain. Once you mentally prepare yourself, you can render an attack ineffective. You're more likely to feel it when you're taken by surprise.

When this happened I was sure to get away with it. I had no dad at the time so all the spankings came from mom. I was much younger than the time I got suspended. Probably 8 or 9.

Anyway, mom wouldn't paddle with my pants down. She would use her hand with my pants down but never the paddle. So when I got caught with a stolen cassette she told me I was going to get paddled.

I decided I needed to go to the bathroom and while I was in there I came up with the idea.

Sure enough, I was correct. The pants stayed up. After a few swats though I started covering my ass. After being warned to stop I was told to pull the pants off and by this point I had forgotten all about the toilet paper. Well, with white underwear (which were left up) on....yeah...she saw it.

    No need to explain further.
