Re: BBC Four documentary series about feminism

Will the special only be highlighting feminism in the UK or will it look at other Western nations (U.S., Australia, etc.)?

Do you know of any way to watch online or if the show will be available for download?
I dated an English girl for some time and would like to learn more about feminism in the UK. I would also gain a better frame of reference in regards to understanding where the posters here from the UK are coming from.

From what I've read, the series appears to be be predominantly focused on the UK feminist movement.

The episodes will be uploaded to the BBC iPlayer soon after each broadcast - and made available to stream/download for seven days. People living outside of Britain are blocked from watching programmes on the iPlayer - however I believe this restriction can be bypassed via the use of a good proxy.

Last night's episode can be viewed here (a proxy is required if you live outside of the UK): 1. Libbers

This is the BBC's description of the episode:

Acclaimed filmmaker Vanessa Engle turns her attention to sexual politics in a three-part documentary series about feminism and its impact on women's lives today.

This first episode charts the rise of the women's liberation movement in the 1970s, and includes interviews with legendary British and American feminists, including Kate Millett, Susan Brownmiller, Germaine Greer, and the last ever interview with novelist Marilyn French, who died in May 2009.

Do not ever suppose that a small group of people can never change the world. INDEED it is the only thing that ever has.

On YouTube, there are quite a few tutorial videos explaining how to watch iPlayer videos from outside of the UK.

Re: BBC Four documentary series about feminism

I wonder if the programme series mentions how between 1913-14, suffragettes committed over 200 acts of treason (plotting to kill the PM), arson (setting fire to numerous royal palaces/churches/castles/buildings), public damage (destroying several paintings in the national gallery and smashing windows at 10 Downing Street) and terrorism (setting off a bomb at Westminister Abbey and ironically several at the BBC itself).

And the plot to assassinate the ex-Prime Minister, Herbert Asquith.

In fact, it was the terrorist actions of the suffragettes which prevented UK women from getting the vote earlier because the government couldn't be seen to give in to terrorists.

Oh, let's not forget in the late 60s onwards - more threats to kill and bomb anyone who dared question feminism, like Erin Pizzey.

I'm sure the BBC will have ensured a balance to this series about feminism.

Interesting. I've never heard that before. I've recently started learning more about the early suffragettes, but mainly the ones here in the US. If you happen to have any links to articles discussing those acts it would be appreciated.

Re: BBC Four documentary series about feminism

I've watched it and was pretty disgusting to listen to feminist arguments which are pretty subversive because, they aim to destroy the powers that make law, normally in the hands of men.

Marilyn french was there as well as Germaine Greer with their usual venomous criticism of men and what a mess they have done with the world in which we live.

    Quote of the day
Sometimes, I imagine my own life as a series of snapshots taken by some omniscient artist who is just keeping track--not interfering or saying anything, just capturing the moment for me to look back at it again later....This is the way it is, the photograph says, and I nod my head in appreciation. The power of art is in that nod or appreciation, though sometimes I puzzle nothing out, and the nod is more a shrug. No, I do not understand this one, but I see it. I take it in. I will think about it. If I sit with this image long enough, this story, I have the hope of understanding something I did not understand before. And that, too, is art, the best art.”Dorothy Allison’s “This is Our World.”
    http://thewomensroom.com.au/

This is a classic example of nonesensical drivel normally published in feminist websites and/or magazines.

How can a man reason with a mind capable of producing gibberish of this quality?

I find hard to answer it without producing similar gibberish writings.

Thankfully marilyn has now passed away, but sadly her writings and her images will be a recurring nightmare, as this programme on the BBC has proved.

At one point, marilyn said that "I will never again will let myself to be controlled by a man" during the interview.
What in marriage should be commitment and duty to the children and family she describes it as "controlled" in a clear subversive statement.
Now millions of women took this statement to their hearts and the consecuences today are all facing us, e.g. fatherless children, rampant divorce, law firms raking in billions £/$ from broken families, feral youth on the rise, you name it and it probably can be traced back to feminism.

I look forward to watch the next programme to see what further tosh will be exposed.
