Activism alert: International Men's Day. November 19th

There is a worldwide push within men's networks to get International Men's Day into a higher gear- ie, to get it better recognized, get it in the press, and get people celebrating it in any way they can- either with a few buddies at the local park, a workplace observation, or something bigger involving a speaker/s or a dinner.

Most important of all is to document any efforts you make and submit it to the IMD global website here: Home You can also keep up with developments by signing up for the IMD newsletter which comes once every month or so (theres no spam).

Pass it on to other MR groups.

PB, I copied that logo but do not have the specific program to edit it. The logo has way too much area around it to be viable. Can you edit it and copy it here so I can use it on my blog..

Have a look at it here (bottom of the page) and it demonstrates exactly what the issue is..

Re: Activism alert: International Men's Day

    Some general information:

    International Men's Day

International Men's Day began on November 19th 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago and was supported by the United Nations. The event received wide support from men's groups in USA, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Ms. Ingeborg Breines, Director of Women and Culture of Peace said, “This is an excellent idea and would give some gender balance.” She added that her organisation was looking forward to cooperating with organisers of IMD.

Objectives of International Men's Day include a focus on men's and boy's health, improving gender relations, promoting gender equality, and highlighting positive male role models. It is an occasion for men to highlight discrimination against them and to celebrate their achievements and contributions, in particular for their contributions to community, family, marriage, and child care. The November IMD is a significant date as it interfaces the popular 'Movember' charity event and also with Universal Children's Day on Nov 20 with which IMD forms a 48 hour celebration of men and children respectively, and of the special relationships they share.

The ability to sacrifice your needs on behalf of others is fundamental to manhood as is honour. Manhood rites of passage the world over recognise the importance of sacrifice in the development of Manhood. Men make sacrifices everyday in their place of work, in their role as husbands and fathers, for their families, for their friends, for their communities and for their nation. International Men’s Day is an opportunity for people everywhere of goodwill to appreciate and celebrate the men in their lives and the contribution they make to society for the greater good of all.

During the past ten years methods of commemorating International Men's Day have included public seminars, classroom activities at schools, radio and television programs, Church observances, and peaceful displays and marches. The manner of observing this annual day is optional; any organizations are welcome to host their own events and any appropriate forums can be used. Early pioneers of IMD reminded that the day is not intended to compete against International Woman's Day, but is for the purpose of highlighting men's experiences. Each year a different theme is highlighted, such as peace in 2002, men’s health in 2003, or sacrifice in 2008. In consultation with organizers from other nations the following broad objectives of IMD are observed:

    • Celebrate manhood and the wonderful positive and valuable contributions our men, young men, and boys make to our communities and to our societies
    • Promote and Support gender equality, encouraging men to address responsibly and positively the challenges facing them in society
    • Demonstrate strength of character and courage in meeting the challenges that men face in society and in contributing to building stronger and better communities, where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.

International Men's Day is celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Australia, India, United States, New Zealand,Pakistan, Haiti, Singapore, Malta, South Africa, China, and the United Kingdom. Join us on November 19 in celebrating the contribution men make to those around them, to their family and friends, their work place and the community, the nations and the world.

What do you want to do with the IMD logo? Change the background color? Be precise.

    IMD

OK, I am going to try to help get International Men's Day setup and running in Canada.

I am going to take it seriously and try my best. I'm also going to look up men's organizations in my area and get involved. I wish I could grow a mustache so I could get in that organization but years of being in a 600 degree overn burned the follicles from my arms and face.

Here is the link of what appears to be the actual IMD website by Jerome Teelucksingh.

I'm not going to reprint what is says but please read it if you are intrested.

    FYI:

    Jerome Teelucksingh

Citizens in Trinidad and Tobago were the first to celebrate IMD on the 19th November, 1999. The event was conceived and coordinated by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, history lecturer from the University of West Indies and the first event was held at the Families in Action Headquarters in Newtown, Port of Spain. In following years the event was jointly coordinated by Dr. Teelucksingh and Harrack Balramsingh, Chairman of Citizens for a Better Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT).

Dr. Teelucksingh chose the date partly to coincide with his father's birthday, whom he felt was an excellent male role model, and also because it was the day in which the football team in his country created a level of unity which crossed gender, religious and ethnic divisions. He added, "I realized there was no day for men... some have said that there is Father's Day, but whaty about young boys, teenagers and men who are not fathers?"

Early objectives of IMD proposed by Dr. Teelucksingh were 1. Improving gender relations between men and women, 2. Addressing problems and challenges of men, 3. Promoting gender equality, 4. Highlighting positive role models, and 5. Creating a safer, better world. Of these he emphasised the importance of positive male role models, "not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives". He also suggested there had developed an unfair practice of 'stereotyping' and 'unfairly branding' males as perpetrators of violence in homes and in society, and said that this was one of the issues he hoped to start addressing.

The idea of celebrating an International Men's Day received written support from U.N. officials in UNESCO and the event has continued to be celebrated annually in Trinidad and Tobago and other countries since it's beginning.

IMD is in Australia, India, Malta, Singapore, and other places on the same day. It can't be summer everywhere at the same time, didn't they teach that at school?? ;-) Events don't need to be outdoors, they can be indoors.

PS what's the weather like where you are in November.... are you in the U.K.? I notice the University of Kent held IMD there last year and 300 people joined in.

uk, november, fucking freezing and usually pissing it down! Not to mention fucking dark after 5 pm..

It would not bother me too much, as a hardy northerner I would say our summer days are as warm as the "winters" in the middle earth terrirtories..

It is just that my experience of lack-lustre turnouts in the MRM has shown that weather is sadly a deciding facktor in the "can I be arsed with this?" attitude that most folk have to things that dont seem as high on the agenda as taking the other half shopping..

Well you're the first I've ever heard blame lack of MRM involvment on the cold, so you learn something every day!

On that account it will come down to those who can tolerate cold, and those who can't.... a handy selection of the fittest. Lol.

PS. Don't forget those indoor venues.

    U.K. 2008

On November 2008 an invitation went out to Kent university students to come and celebrate International Men's Day at Mungos! This event was organized and coordinated by Canterbury's Kent University student organization 'Raise and Give' (or RAG as we are better known). RAG is Kent Unions charitable arm located in the Student Activities Centre which raises thousands of pounds for charity each year! The night started at 7pm with live soccer coverage of England v Germany on the big screen, and afterwards the evening heated up with a mixture of comedy and live music from student favourites, "Clacket Lane". There was a raffle including the chance to win some of the very latest computer games for X Box and PS3 alongside many more suprises! There was also a guitar hero competition and an X-box tournament with the chance to win more prizes. About 300 people attended with roughly equal numbers of males and females. The event was a resounding success and all participants had a memorable celebration.

All proceeds went to ORCHID a charity for all male cancers, including prostate, penile or testicular cancer. Male attendees at International Men's Day were invited to buy a "Know Your Balls" wrist band at Mungos campus bar and get entry discounts at the Venue for afterwards. Orchid plays a leading role in the fight against male cancer through research and awareness and by supporting patients.

Well you're the first I've ever heard blame lack of MRM involvment on the cold, so there's a new one fer ya.

On that account it will come down to those who can tolerate cold, and those who can't.... a handy selection of the fittest. Lol.

I know as much simply from my efforts in the past to get folk to attend events..

Even good MRA's will allow the weather to influence their decisions..

Lets just say for example, their is a demo or whatever planned..

The day of the week will be significant, as well as the location.

Also of significance will be the "what is in it for me?" factor..

If an event is planned nearer some facilities of interest, say, Blackpool, then there is entertainment for all the family and the event becomes a "day out" or even a "weekend of leisure" with a theme for the father..

(Has anyone ever wondered why the big parties always choose seaside resorts for their conferences?)

I would be very worried if you are hoping to select "the fittest" of the bunch..

You will be looking at single digit turnouts, because the whole bunch is unlikely to be in 3 digits at the best of times!

Don't get me wrong, I support the idea, but I am also aware of the dreadful apathy of the vast majority of men when it comes to matters that are in their interests..

    I wish it were different..

I will, predictably perhaps, suggest that an international family day would be more useful!
