On being Men - a review

Few of us are likely to be held up as Role Models.

Well, I speak for you as I have been pm'd on several occasions by male members asking how they could be more like me. I have even had some of our female members asking if I could post a lock of my hair and where can they find a chap like me for their very own.

"Percy", say some blokes here, "how can I become a damned fine chap too?"

Well, the answer is at hand.

Gentlemen - and wannabee Chaps, I bring you......

    Am I A Chap?
Submit Yourself to theUltimate Sartorial Inspection

Am I A Chap? by Gustav Temple is published by BeautifulBooks.

This comprehensive tome seeks to classify every species and sub-species of the English gentleman that one may observe throughout the seasons, from the flamboyant young fop to the crusty old duffer. Looking at the origins of the "Chap" genus, in figures such as Edward VII and Ian Carmichael, and their caddish counterparts such as Terry-Thomas and BunnyRoger, the book takes us up to the present day with comtemporary types such as the Bohemian Chap and the Hip Chap.

The book includes a selection of the photographs sent into the magazine's "Am I Chap?" section, along with their vigorous, uncompromising but ultimately helpful sartorial critiques. Elsewhere you will find detailed histories of the essential accoutrements for a gentleman's wardrobe, from brogues to trilbies to Fair Isle sweaters; pen-portraits of those who seem to be carrying the Chappist ensign as they go about their daily business -familiar characters such as Atters, Albion and Billy Childish.

With 192 full colour pages, concluding with a definitive directory of Britain's finest emporia of gentlemanly raiment, including new, vintage and bespoke, Am I A Chap? is an essential tome for any budding Chap-about-Town, fitting snugly into the poacher's pocket of a good Hackingjacket; it will also serve as a stylish and useful compendium for those with a desire to go "Chap Spotting".

The book will retail in all respectable booksellers for £10.99, but readers of The Chap may take advantage of a very special offer from Beautiful Books, who are offering you a generous discount of 20% on the cover price, with no post or packaging charges of any kind. Simply send a cheque made payable to Beautiful Books for the sum of £8.79 to:

For our rogue Brothers in the States might we consider being a Chap something of a retro thing?
    to Fair Isle sweaters
This is most cetainly where our English and Irish cousins have it all over us in the States. We have wool and we have sweaters but the really good ones we must import.

My friend has, of course, written to the Editor, decrying the aspertions cast on beards.

And the omission of any mention of Deer-Stalker hats.

    Dear Sir,

    > I am delighted that you and your fine magazine are doing so well in maintaining standards in a world which is rapidly going to the dogs.

    > Well it would be were the dog in question to be a hunting hound or even a pointer, or perhaps a water dog. But ‘tis the whippet – type that the phrase is directed, and the betting laid thereon for their racing performance; which is the preserve of the ‘Bloke’.

    > I have a small matter however that I wish to bring to your attention and, indeed, with which take issue. It concerns your ‘Manifesto’.

    > Chaps of a ‘certain age’, well beyond the bread-roll throwing period of life, may wish to grow more than a moustache.

    > This is his Right.

    > To be considered a ‘non-chap’ simply by virtue of an ability to carry a fine beard, could be thought a Petulance by someone with a punitive inclination.

    > For Virtue it is, to be a Bearded Older Chap.

    > Please amend your rules and definitions.

    > And one more thing: I see no mention anywhere of the Deer-stalker. This headgear is singularly indicative of a certain type of chap found in higher intellectual echelons. But Chap nonetheless. I hope to see some recognition, acknowledgement and accolade for the Deer-Stalker in the near future – if not immediately.

    > I remain,

    > Your most Chipper Chap,

    > Sir Ambrose Fortas, Air Vice Marshal, RAF (Retd). KCMG, PhD

The most offensive thing you can do to a feminist is treat her with FULL equality.

Might it be: men are womens means to an end, whimsical as it may be?
