That might as well be a disclaimer at the end of every article about war victims. We seem to be flooded with personal stories about a lack of men to marry, leading to waves of single women over the age of thirty in Afghanistan, we hear about the struggles of single women raising children, and the work in the production industry they have to take up as the wars go on.

We hear all about their troubles, but we see a lot less on the hell of war itself. Yes we hear the major catastrophes and Sunday political round tables reveal who died during the week in the US but the men tend to go unnoticed. Not just because they are called soldiers (the overwhelming majority of those in combat are male)

We ignore the men, and by doing that we don’t assume men suffer during war. Its how we get things like Hillary Clinton saying

Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat. Women often have to flee from the only homes they have ever known. Women are often the refugees from conflict and sometimes, more frequently in today’s warfare, victims. Women are often left with the responsibility, alone, of raising the children
Yes that’s right. Where did all the men go? Why aren’t they suffering? Oh yes, that’s right…THEY’RE DEAD!

I saw in one neat reference to men at war a 'assets' and "casualities" or as numbers eg "20 were killed " in a fire fight "

this renders real dead men as statistics and desccriptions

Of course no men get harmed during the making of a war- it's just a whole heap of "the enemy" from the perspective of each different side.
